Sioux Indians by billy rogus

Dozens of native nations lived on the Great Plains including the Sioux Indians, also known as the Lakota or Dakota. The name Sioux means "little snakes". These Native Americans were nomadic and occupied territory in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and North and South Dakota, however they were also known to live in parts of Nebraska, Illinois, and Montana.

Below is the Sioux tribes alphabet.

The map below shows the location of the Sioux tribe in the United States.

The Great Plains have a wide variety of weather through the year, with very cold and harsh winters and very hot and humid summers. The Sioux experience the four seasons just like we do here near Chicago; spring, summer, fall, and winter.

The physical features include plateaus and mountains.

The Sioux Indians were nomadic, meaning that they never really stayed in one place for a very long amount of time. They followed the pattern of the buffalo, assuring them that there would be food and clothing wherever they traveled.

The Sioux also grew crops like corn, squash, and beans, most of the Sioux got their food from hunting. Their primary food source was meat from bison, but they also hunted deer and elk. They would dry the bison meat into a tough jerky that could be stored and lasted for over a year.

One of the most important things about the Sioux Indian life was the buffalo. They used all of the buffalo, not just its meat for food. They used the skin and fur for blankets and cloths. They tanned the hides to make the coverings for their teepees. Bones were used as tools. The bison hair was used to make ropes and the tendons could be used for sewing thread and bow strings.

The religious beliefs of the Sioux centered around Wakan Tanka. It was their god and creator of all things. They were also a very spiritual group and believed that all things have spirits. (picture #1)

The men wore leggings and buckskin shirts when it was cool. When it was really cold they would wear warm cloaks made from buffalo hides. (picture #2)

The women wore dresses made from deerskin. They would decorate them with rabbit fur. (photo #3)

Like other Native American tribes, they also have high cheekbones and large noses.

The Sioux are known for their distinguished looks. Their hair is very black and it is worn long
