Materials

The children have had a brilliant week finding out about different materials. We collected materials which had different textures and categorised then into groups of wood, plastic, metal and glass. They also used really good vocabulary to describe what they could feel.

Our next job was to look at magnets and the children were fascinated by this. They spent so much time observing what they could see and grouping objects into those that were magnetic and others that were not.

The children were then giving a challenge to work with a partner to retrieve a paper clip out of a glass bottle which had water in it. The challenge was to get the paper clip out of the bottle without getting their hands wet. The only thing they could use was a magnet and some string. The children showed some excellent problem solving skills and in time they all completed the challenge. 👏

This week we also thought about what games we could make with magnets and the children came up with a fishing game where they had to design their own fish, attach a paper clip and then make a fishing rod using a magnet for the hook. It was great fun and the children even got to practice their hand and eye coordination.

We also looked at objects that would float and sink, the children began by predicting what they thought would happen and then we tested them out. There were some surprises in there but we soon sorted the objects into the correct piles.
