Gender Equality In Sports Noah Gauthier-Gregory
Gender equality has always been a heavy problem in our society. Over the years sexism has definitely diminished, but it still exists out there. One of the biggest debates in organized sports these days is should girls be allowed to play on boy’s sports teams. Some people believe that girls shouldn’t be allowed to play with boys but that’s not how I feel about the subject. I believe that if someone wants to take up a sport, regardless of their gender they should be allowed if they are good enough.
People argue that “girls aren’t as tough as boys”, therefore they shouldn’t be allowed to play on the same team as men. I know, from many personal experiences growing up in a house with three girls, that women can just just as tough if not more than men. Women are tough as nails. If a girl has the skill and work ethic needed to play on a boy’s sports team, they should be allowed. Everybody deserves to be dealt a fair hand and given a chance to prove there self. I have no problem with a girl playing on my hockey team, as long as she makes the team based on her skills and work ethic. Men and women both have the potential to be hard working, honest, and genuine.
Growing up in a house with 3 girls has definitely opened my eyes on the subject of gender equality. Both my sisters played hockey growing up, one played girls hockey, and one played boys hockey. Caillie, the one who played with the boys had no problem keeping up with them. She even looked like she was a more effective hockey player than some of the boys playing. She would fly down the ice, leaving boys in her rear-view.
In my opinion, gender should not be a deciding factor on whether or not someone is allowed to play on a sports team. Girls can be just as athletic as boys can be. Sports were created to be competitive, to have fun, and to stay healthy. Everyone in Canada has the opportunity to do what he or she wants and that’s the beauty of our country. Its 2015 and people need to start understanding that gender does not make a difference and women deserve to be treated with the same respect as men.
