City Manager's Report February 11, 2022

Brea Gallery Opening Reception

The Brea Gallery kicked off the new year with its first exhibit of 2022, Nature vs Nurture on January 29. To celebrate the opening night, the Gallery hosted a free public event with refreshments, music, and a Gift Shop sale. Many of the artists attended and were available to discuss their featured pieces. In the Nature vs Nurture exhibit, ten artists explore themes of the natural world through sculpture, video installation, photography, charcoal drawings, and paintings. Each is a unique, and sometimes an abstracted, view of humanity’s relationship with the planet.

The Gallery has resumed normal business hours, Wednesday through Sunday 12 to 5:00 p.m. To see more and learn about the artists in the show, visit the Gallery’s website.

187th Art in Public Places Installation Completed at Avalon Bay Apartments

City staff is pleased to announce that the newest Art in Public Places (APP) installation was recently completed at the corner of Birch Street and State College Boulevard. Pollination!, an original series of work by artist Dixie Friend Gay, is the 187th public art installation in Brea’s APP program. The series includes a mosaic mural measuring eight feet high and 40 feet wide, accompanied by three sculptures ranging 15 to 21 feet high, all depicting flowers native to California and their organic forms. Dixie is a renowned mosaic muralist and sculptor with over 25 public commissions nationwide, including prominent installations at both the Port of Miami and Dallas Love Field Airports.

Brea is thankful for the continued dedication of its Art in Public Places Advisory Committee, the Cultural Arts Commission, and the City Council for their support of Art in Public Places. A special thanks and congratulations to Avalon Bay for their contribution to the APP Program.

Digital Directory Installed on Third Floor of the Civic & Cultural Center

The Brea Civic & Cultural Center has upgraded its third-floor lobby signage. Visitors will now find a new digital directory to help locate offices and services.

This upgrade was due to recent modifications of staff work areas, which included moving services to different locations on the floor.

The new display is now at eye level and easy to read. This change has also allowed more flexibility than was previously provided by static signage. Information can be easily adjusted as service and messaging needs are required.
