Inside FWISD News Transitions to New Format

Stay Updated on District News Via the Employees Webpage, Inside FWISD Blog

The Fort Worth ISD thanks you for supporting Inside FWISD. Coming soon, a new format will debut.

In December 2017, the FWISD Communications Department launched its weekly Inside FWISD newsletter. For the last six years, it has been distributed to employee inboxes via email. Today marks the final publication of the weekly newsletter distributed to employees via email.

After spring break, Inside FWISD news for District employees will appear on the FWISD Employee page, the Inside FWISD blog, and Dr. Ramsey’s Friday Message. Check the pages and newsletter regularly to stay updated on what’s happening across the District.

As always, we want to hear about the great things going on with District employees, on FWISD campuses and in various departments. Please continue to share your story ideas, successes, calendar items and photos with us via Inside@fwisd.org. We also welcome your questions and feedback about what type of content you would most like us to provide via the new format. Please submit your feedback via email.

We look forward to receiving and reading your suggestions. We hope you have a safe and restful spring break and look forward to continuing sharing your stories after the break.

FWISD Observes Dolores Huerta and César Chávez Day of Service March 27

Honor the legacies of civil and human rights advocates César Chávez and Dolores Huerta by participating in Fort Worth ISD’s (FWISD) 2023 Day of Service activities. First, you’ll want to join the District for an elementary reading marathon March 24. Then, on March 27, high school students, FWISD staff who are not working for their staff development day, families and community volunteers are invited to join the District in cleaning up community parks.

Register here to volunteer March 27. Multiple volunteer slots are available, but space is limited.

The FWISD Family Action Center is working closely with the City's Keep Fort Worth Beautiful and the Fort Worth Parks and Recreation departments on this initiative. This includes one project in each of the nine FWISD Districts. The goal is to reflect Mr. Chavez and Ms. Huerta’s vision of promoting service to others, knowledge, acceptance of all people and respect for life, the environment and education for all.

Minors who register must be accompanied by an adult guardian. Further instructions will be provided through a confirmation email. The events will happen, rain or shine. Volunteers will be able to select the location and shift of their choice. Upon arrival at their chosen site, volunteers should look for blue pop-up tents to sign in and receive further instructions and supplies.

Ahead of the March 27 Day of Service, first through fifth grade students from FWISD’s César Chávez and Dolores Huerta elementary schools will honor the civil and human rights advocates with books and words. In collaboration with a community advocate, the District is piloting its inaugural Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta Reading Marathon at the two schools March 24. The reading marathons will be live streamed on Facebook from each school.

Monday, March 27, is a student holiday and staff development day. In 2018, the Fort Worth ISD Board of Education passed a resolution establishing an annual District observance honoring Mr. Chávez and Ms. Huerta in March. The District observes the student holiday the Monday prior to Mr. Chávez’s March 31 birthdate.

CTE Hosts Inaugural FWISD International Women’s Day Conference Sponsored by Wells Fargo

FWISD’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) Department partnered with Wells Fargo this week to celebrate International Women’s Day by hosting an inaugural conference celebrating women. Young women from five FWISD high schools (Diamond Hill-Jarvis, Eastern Hills, O.D. Wyatt, Western Hills, and Young Women’s Leadership Academy) who have participated in a CTE program of study for three to four years spent the day learning, having fun, and getting inspired.

The day kicked off with notable speakers, including FWISD superintendent Dr. Angélica M. Ramsey; Wells Fargo representatives; campus principals, and more. The day included breakout sessions, mentors for the young women, lunch, and dancing before resuming additional afternoon sessions with volunteer presenters.

The breakout sessions, facilitated by women from the community, focused on:

  • Advocacy
  • Leadership
  • Healthy Relationships
  • Positive Self-Image / Self-Care
  • Social Capital
  • Financial Stability/Management
  • Service

The day was fun-filled, and the young women felt hopeful and inspired.

“My favorite session so far was about self-care. I learned to take care of myself and take it one day at a time,” said Jamie from World Languages Institute.

Mentors sat with students who talked about their goals, like Candace from Western Hills High School, who shared that she would like to study animation. Her mentor suggested viewing documentaries about how some artists started at Disney.

Ashley from O.D. Wyatt High shared that she enjoyed and learned a lot from the Wells Fargo session that discussed saving and investing.

The young women celebrated International Women’s Day in a big way and with newly gained experiences, like Maria from Young Women’s Leadership Academy, who had the opportunity to introduce the morning guest speakers. She said she was thankful for the experience and shared how it was “nice to see Ms. Albury, my principal, in a different light and in the community.”

YMLA Highlighted as Exemplar Program in Educational Research Book

Have you heard? Our Young Men's Leadership Academy (YMLA) is doing amazing things. They are one of only six schools in the U.S. that were featured in a new academic book called "When Black Students Excel: How Schools Can Engage and Empower Black Students." And they're the only Texas program in the book!

The book was published last fall, and it's about how schools can help Black students succeed. It shares stories and insights from award-winning schools, teachers, students, and parents. You can learn more about it and get a copy here.

The FWISD YMLA is a school for boys in grades 6-12. They have won the America's Best Urban School Award not once, but twice. That's pretty impressive. Congratulations to the students and staff, including Principal Rodney White.
