LEAP (UK) - The Alliance of Girls School is pleased to share an exclusive opportunity for our student leaders. Students with leadership and entrepreneurial ambitions are invited to enter a competition where one lucky entrant will win full sponsorship (including flights) to participate in the international Leadership and Entrepreneurship Accelerator Programme (LEAP), in the UK. The sponsorship will be awarded to one student from an Alliance member school.

One of the world's premier female leadership programmes, LEAP develops business, entrepreneurial and leadership skills through launching social enterprise projects to target key global issues. International teams of students formulate their own ideas into a business pitch. Global experts act as coaches, mentors and guides. Finally they act as investors, ready to provide funding in a Dragon's Den like final pitch. Worth up to $7,000 (AUD) this is an outstanding opportunity.

Girls Education Research - An interesting academic article on Girls Education - Linking brain research to classroom practice for girls (my comments about our practice at HGHS are italicised). The article can be found on our school website.

Summary - Effective pedagogy for girls is characterised by:

• Lessons which have a clearly visible structure; (it is good that we all use Success Criteria and Learning Intentions in lessons and where appropriate SOLO)

• A high level of involvement and interactivity, a focus on talk, and a willingness of the teacher to create a collaborative learning environment; (I often observe these factors in lessons when visiting classrooms or on my daily walk past all classrooms)

• An acknowledgement that interactivity does not always mean frenzied activity and variety; (this is a good point that we don’t need constant changes in lessons to allow for deeper exploration of topics)

• The creation of a sense of confidence and security for the learners, so that girls are willing to learn from each other, to take risks and explore; (a reminder that we need to continually tell the students about the importance of personal bests and effort rather)

• The development of a collaborative partnership between learners and teacher, fostering independent learning but within a secure and challenging environment; (we have a strong focus at HGHS on positive relationships which is seen in all of our classrooms)

• An awareness that however confident girls appear, teachers need to take time and space to reassure, even when girls seem less confident in their own abilities than they ought to be. (Our strong wellbeing programs and good relationships are evidence that we continually reassure students with our feedback and comments).

Kind regards,

Justin Briggs (Principal)

TEACHER APPRECIATION DAY

On Friday the 28th of October, we celebrated Teachers Appreciation Day. TAD is an event held annually that gives students an opportunity to express their gratitude for their amazing teachers. On this special day, we are able to honour and appreciate teachers and recognise their lasting contributions to the education and wellbeing of students. Annually, the HGHS SRC collaborate and we sing a parody to a catchy, well-known song for the teachers. At the staff meeting on Friday, we performed a parody to the song 'September' - by Earth, Wind & Fire (with stunning pitch as the music staff commented) and created cards with personalised messages to each teacher on behalf of the school community to show our gratitude. Seeing the teachers smile and laugh as they watched us perform was an experience in itself. This day was full of excitement and laughter from both students and teachers.

Hamlin bake sale

We raised $1669.50 on Hamlin Bake Sale Mufti Day!!!

On the 27th of October, HGHS students and teachers had the immense pleasure of having delicious treats from the Hamlin Bake Sale Mufti Day. Students and teachers voluntarily created appetising edibles, ranging from pastries to donuts. There was also a lolly-guessing competition, where the students could test their luck and get some treats. The day was mufti, so students and staff had the opportunity to dress up in blue and make a gold coin donation. All proceeds from the event went to the Catherine Hamlin Fistula Foundation - a charity that supports women in Ethiopia who suffer from fistula (a childbirth injury caused by prolonged labour). The foundation aims to eradicate fistula, by providing accessible treatment for those who have less privileges than others. Massive thanks to students and staff for all their support. The day was a great success and was full of fun, and was enjoyed by students and staff alike!

Meghna Sukaraj - Social Justice member

remembrance day

To complement the 'One Minute of Silence' at 11am on Remembrance Day, Friday 11th November, HGHS students and staff were invited to post poppies to the HGHS Library's 'Wall of Poppies' display. These symbolic acts served to express our respect and gratitude for those who have given their lives whilst serving in the Australian Armed Forces.

Lest we forget.

YEAR 9 FOOD TECHNOLOGY - MCCORMICK'S RECIPE CHALLENGE

What is the McCormick Flavour Forecast Challenge?

The McCormick flavour forecast challenge is a competition annually run by herb and spices company McCormick’s It encourages young people to explore new flavour trends and to innovatively create dishes aligned to new trends of the year. The challenge has four flavour trends to inspire your dishes with a set of requirements and set ingredients for each one.

The two Year nine Food Technology classes were given an assessment task based on the challenge and had to create a dish and prepare a submission to enter the competition. Students worked individually and were then matched with other students to complete a submission of three dishes each dish representing a different flavour trend. The successful team was Sara Grados, Lauren Wilson and Regina Mo.

Regina Mo, Lauren Wilson and Sara Grados

Sara Grados - Sweet and Seasonal - I chose to do the sweet and seasonal sensation flavour challenge which required me to create a breakfast dish with a smoked spice. It also had to be high in fibre and contain a dairy alternative. This inspired me to create my Spanish Baked Eggs with Cheesy Herb Crispbread.

Regina Mo – Global Finds - Global Finds" is a trend identified by McCormicks which revolves around consumers' increasing desires for hyper-local flavours. I was challenged to create a dish that highlights spices, textures and ingredients to deliver global flavour within the school kitchen. My dish, Smoky Skewered Platter, heroes smoked sweet potato skewers, accompanied by a homemade garlic naan bread and a dukkah blend. Additionally, cooking techniques such as grilling and toasting the skewers and dukkah with spices such as cumin, coriander, and paprika were learnt and refined to enhance the overall flavour profile of the platter. Overall, McCormicks challenged me to think creatively, as I was able to fuse aromatic flavours of Indian and Mediterranean cuisine to the table - hence incorporating the trend, Global Finds.

Lauren Wilson- Spicy Revolution - My selected flavour trend was Spicy (R)evolution. This trend required me to create a plant-based burger that contained at least one type of legume, with an accompanying sauce/salsa/condiment that used two types of chillies and one citrus fruit. I decided to make a black bean burger, with a spicy edamame guacamole, creamy apple slaw and a side of spicy sweet potato fries.

What was enjoyable?

Sara - This challenge was extremely enjoyable to complete because of the collaboration that it required within the class. The collaboration came with the opportunity for our class to bond over our shared passion for food. It was fun giving each other feedback on what looked good from their recipes as well as giving them feedback on how to create the best entries possible. I am proud of the work that all of my class put into this challenge and grateful for the help from my teammates in our entry.

Lauren - The most enjoyable aspect of the challenge for me was the creative freedom we were allowed to have, and the amount of food tasting we did. As long as the dish fit the brief, we could essentially make whatever we wanted. I really enjoyed tasting everyone’s food and what they created, as everyone made such unique and diverse dishes. Collaborating with my peers was also a fun experience for this challenge, as we all co-operated and helped one another, inside and outside the food tech kitchen. I really enjoyed working with my teammates Regina and Sara because they made the challenge super fun and stress-free

LIBRARY MONITORs' MORNING TEA

The Library hosted a morning tea on Thursday 10th at recess to say thank you to our wonderful Library Monitors who received their badges. The job of Library Monitor is an important one in keeping the resource cycle flowing in the library. Monitors attend the desk before school, at recess and lunchtime to return and lend out resources. They also do the reservations and help students find resources. (AND are often a source of recommendations for great reads.) Clearly, this is not only an important administrative job, but also one which demands highly honed people skills! So thank you, HGHS Library Monitors.

ADOPT A COP

PASS SPEEDTAG (CAPTURE THE FLAG X OZTAG)

In Week 9 of Term 3, students from Year 9 PASS held a mixed-grade, Speedtag game (a combination of capture the flag and oztag) in order to promote physical activity and active lifestyles. Students from grades 7, 8, 9 and 10 were encouraged to sign up and over 30 people participated in the event!

Ultimately it was team non-bibs, which was a combination of Year 7s and 10s that took out the win for the day. Congratulations on becoming our Speed Tag champions with a total of 12 tags! Thank you to all the amazing students who signed up for the game and Ms Hoogerwerf for helping us organise this event.

clASS OF 2015 and 2016 HGHS STUDENTS - GOOGLE TALK

On 10th November three ex Hornsby Girls students: Kassandra di Bona (software engineer in Google Photos), Katherine Allen (SE in Google Photos) and Sophia Lin (Google) came to our school to engage with the students. All three are current Google employees and they talked to the students about life at university, what it's like working in IT and what working in Google is like.

The talk was very popular with about 90 students attending who really enjoyed listening and speaking to the visitors.

We would like to send a big thank you to the three visitors for taking time out of their busy days to come and speak with us.

YEAR 9 PASS - THE FUN FIONAS

On the 28th of October, 39 students from years 7-9 participated in a crossover game of oztag and capture the flag called, “Capture the Tag”, which aimed to promote active lifestyles in individuals. This fun and engaging lunchtime activity was a huge success, with teams discussing tactics and players displaying their dodging skills! It was great seeing everyone actively participating and having fun with their friends.

Actively participating in physical activity on a daily basis is important as it can improve wellbeing (both emotionally and mentally), strengthen bones and muscles, reduce the risk of diseases and boost your overall health.

Congratulations to the year 7 team who ended up taking home the amazing lolly prize, and a massive thank you to everyone else who participated! We hope you enjoyed taking part :)

YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCE

In Week 5, we undertook Year 10 work experience at an impact fund management company, Melior Investment Management. During our time there, we met with team leaders in public and private equity, learning more about their work and career paths. We also had the opportunity to attend a conference. It was particularly interesting to learn about the emerging trend in finance to invest in companies that actively contribute to building a better future by their commitment to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. This was such a valuable experience and we hope to partake in more opportunities like this in the future!

Maths Challenge 2022

The Maths Challenge is a problem-solving activity organised by the Australian Maths Trust (AMT), which is aimed at stimulating the mathematically interested students in their year level.

The Maths Challenge takes place over three to four consecutive weeks. Students receive a problem book containing six problems and are required to present written solutions to as many of these problems as they can. The problems are challenging and require time and persistence, but are based on maths that should be known at that level for students in the Junior (Year 7-8) and Intermediate (Year 9-10) levels.

This program takes dedication as well as mathematical ability and is ideal for students who want to extend their mathematical knowledge and understanding. The Maths Challenge is designed to be an enjoyable and valuable learning experience for students.

Student responses will be returned to them, along with their certificates when they are delivered from the AMT

Congratulations to all students who participated and especially to our award winners.
