L’SHANA TOVA U’METUKAH - HERE'S TO A SWEET 5781!
- This past week I have been glued to my screen, watching the Democratic National Convention. Conventions, as you know, are usually busy and loud affairs - the crowds cheering, the giant balloons drop at the finale. Of course, this time around all that had to change as the convention moved from an in-person event to a virtual one. How would they make it work? I wondered. How would they keep it exciting and inspiring?
- Well, they did. Rather than trying to re-create everything that might ordinarily have been done in a different format, they decided to re-imagine the experience. They opted to focus on what technology could add to the experience, rather than on what was being taken away; and the result was a different, and yet a quite satisfying and inspiring event.
- In just a few weeks we will gather as a community to welcome a new Jewish year. This year’s High Holy Days will be like none that we have known before as we move to a virtual platform. This change is not easy for many of us. We will miss our usual ways of worship. We will miss being in the same room, greeting one another live, catching up on each other’s news through side conversations, embracing one another, and hearing our joined voices lifted in song and repentant prayer.
- There is a lot we will miss during these High Holidays. However, maybe if we prepare and if we are open to the experience, it might just open new doorways to beauty and inspiration.
- How do we best prepare for this year’s High Holy Days? Here are a few suggestions:
- We use our screens for many purposes - for work, to socialize with friends, for entertainment. Our challenge during these Days of Awe is to transform them to become vehicles of holiness so that our homes can become a mikdash m’at for each one of us.
- My colleague Rabbi Elyse Goldstein offers several suggestions to help with this transformation. I am sharing some of them here in the hopes that they might help:

IS IT REALLY SEPTEMBER ALREADY?
- While it seems like a year ago was forever, this year has certainly gone by quickly. It has already been 6 months since the coronavirus upended our lives and we closed our Temple building.
- As I write this article, I feel like we are turning a corner. While we still have a while to go before we can pray together as a community in our beautiful sanctuary, we are making progress towards that goal. Marie is back in the office and we are preparing the building to enable us to gather when it is safe to do so.
- I feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude for being part of this community. We have an active Board of Trustees that has kept us strong through these trying times, a fabulous staff that continues to keep our building functioning, and an amazing Rabbi who inspires and guides us! And we have YOU – a group of warm, committed, and supportive families that make up our Temple Family!!
- Virtual or in-person, the High Holidays is a time for new beginnings, a time for celebrating, and a time for reflecting. This is a time to spend with friends and family. Our Temple Family will gather virtually this year. Yes, it will be different; however, the apples and honey will be just as sweet and the sound of the shofar just as joyful. I will still welcome the solemn period of atoning.
- As you start the New Year, may you discover new opportunities in your life, and may your dreams come true...

WELCOME BACK FROM A VERY UNUSUAL SUMMER!
- I hope everyone is weathering this very strange year well and that you and your families are safe and happy.
- We have been busy putting a flexible plan in place for the upcoming school year. We are making the necessary adjustments to be able to safely meet in-person. At the same time our teachers have been hard at work learning the best practices on how to hold engaging ZOOM lessons. We are fully prepared to go either way and barring any significant changes in the current environment, we plan to begin with a hybrid model.
- We believe this plan balances the in-person socialization needs, particularly for our lower grade students, with safe social distancing and sanitary procedures. As the environment changes, we will adjust as needed.
- I would like to personally thank the parents who responded to our survey and participated in our parent meetings. Your input helped guide us in preparing this plan and we hope you agree that it is sensible, balanced, and safe.

Bat Mitzvah - Saturday, September 12th 2020
- Hi, my name is Zoe Dylin Albert! I am going into the 8th grade and I am 13 years old. I go to Herricks Middle School. I live with my Mom, Dad, and little sister, Josslyn who is 8 years old. I love to go to school, because I love to learn new things every day! I love to hang out with my friends, spend time with my family, go to the pool in the summertime, do TikTok, and ride my bike! I also love my devices. I don’t like thunderstorms or cold temperatures in the winter.
- Becoming a Bat Mitzvah means to me that I will now begin to have a lot of responsibilities, such as - getting a job done, going to college, and always acting in a positive way! For my Mitzvah Project, I will be collecting birthday party supplies and gifts for teens for the Birthday Wishes of Long Island Organization. I am doing this to provide for teens who don’t have any birthday supplies to celebrate with their families and friends. I feel happy about helping with this organization, because I think it important to give back to others who are not as fortunate as me and my family.
- My name is Alexandra and I love to dance and bake. I have been doing ballet for about 4 years and jazz for about 7. I also love baking for my family. I enjoy baking challenging things like scones, tiramisu, and layered cake. I have a lot of friends from summer camp and enjoy spending time with them in person and virtually. Sharing my B’nai Mitzvah with Victor is very important to me and is something I have been excited about since I was little.
- My name is Victor and I love to play sports and video games. I really enjoy playing basketball with my friends and with my team. I also play the guitar and take lessons every Wednesday. I love to travel with my family and learn about new places and cultures. I am excited to have my B’nai Mitzvah on September 25th with my twin sister Alexandra, because I will be considered an adult.

- As we breathe in deeply the arrival of the new year, we welcome the awe of its newness. Now, more than ever before that newness seems to be everywhere, in every breath we take. Yet with each bit that is alarming, we can also feel the exhilaration that a new year is upon us; and it holds so true, as we start this new endeavor of now Co-Chairing our Synagogue’s Early Childhood Program. We shall enter the New Year and new position with as much hope and gratefulness, as there are challenges. We are both moms, as well as early childhood teachers; and with our combined experiences, we know that despite any uncertainties that may surround you, you can always count on finding the joy in seeing the awe that little ones bring to each and every moment. We are looking forward to relishing in the beauty that our Tikvah Tots see in all that is new; all there is to discover.
- We have many great Events planned to start our New Year – On September 19th at 2:45pm, join Tikvah Tots as we celebrate Rosh Hashanah with shofar blowing, songs, and stories and on Saturday, October 3rd (TBA) we will celebrate Sukkot with songs and a craft. Whether we are virtual or in person, we can ensure developmentally appropriate fun, while our little ones learn about these festive holidays. HAPPY ROSH HASHANAH - A TIME OF PRAYER, SELF-REFLECTION, AND T’SHUVAH ("RETURN" - THE CONCEPT OF REPENTENCE AND NEW BEGINNINGS.)
- As we prepare for 5781 we reflect on the past year’s memories…Junior Congregation, both in-person and via ZOOM; as well as drive-in movie nights, the Purim Carnival, and Family Havdalah Programs. Among the many ways we have stayed connected, even though we are apart have been by having Virtual Trivia Nights, Family Bingo Evenings, and continuing our Havdalah Programs. All-in-all, it has been an educational and fun year!
- I am looking forward to continuing our Junior Congregation Programs monthly and praying together with everyone. We will be holding Virtual High Holiday Services for our students, on the first day of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Further information will be coming shortly.
- Our Family Havdalah Programs will also continue with Virtual Activities from candy sushi making to pizza creations, and even to a virtual paint night. I hope to have one or two in-person socially safe events during the fall to celebrate Sukkah.
- I hope all of you and your families are doing well. This has been an incredibly trying time and I am so proud of everyone.

THE CHALLENGE OF SEPTEMBER 2020
- A congregation is a group of people who are together to pray…A school is a place where people congregate to learn…And September is the month that we begin a new cycle of prayer and learning that is enriched and enhanced by our contact with one another and the spiritual and secular educators who lead us. So we now ask, how can we continue all of our traditions during the Covid-19 Pandemic?
- During The Days of Awe, every individual must evaluate their thoughts and actions in the hope of forgiveness, along with the desire to improve. How do we deal with Covid-19? Can we move our relationships closer? How do we relate to the larger community?
- This pandemic has increased poverty and loneliness in our society. As we read the holy books, we will be reminded of the many ways a good person helps those who are suffering. Here are some ideas: Social Action has traditionally worked with organizations that aid the poor. Please continue to support The INN and the local food banks. The Center for Transformative Change at The INN has specific days when they hand out diapers and toiletries during their Feeding the Hungry Program from 9am to 2pm. Please contact the social worker Patricia, at 516.489.3238 during that time. Long Island Cares also feeds the hungry. Help get needy children ready for school. In addition, the 2020 Elections will soon be upon us. PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE REGISTERED TO VOTE AND VOTE ON TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 3RD 2020.
- Social Action can be spiritual. There are people who have no material needs that are suffering from loneliness, isolation, and fear of “normal ‘ events such as shopping or going to the doctor. There are children who cannot be home schooled properly, because their parents are unable to both work and educate them. Many people are isolated by our society’s response to communication during the virus. We ask anyone who is able to go to your computer and find and help a person learn to make the digital world a part of their lives. Everyone from teens to retirees can find people to help. As you approach The Days of Awe, put on your mask and contact someone who is not part of our world of technological communication and welcome the person you helped. Covid-19 has created a new mitzvah.

- As I begin my first year as Sisterhood President, I would like to welcome everyone back from the summer. How different and difficult it has been for everyone. In spite of the pandemic, Temple Tikvah’s Sisterhood remained significantly active. In July with the help of our Rabbi and together with Brotherhood, we created a joint Sisterhood/Brotherhood Service, which was very well received on ZOOM. We had a very successful Honey Sale, run by Michele Gold. The profits will be given to the Temple. Our Simcha Greetings Program continues spreading joy to Temple Members and contributing funds to Sisterhood.
- As I take on the challenge of Sisterhood President, I am in awe of the determination of our members to forge forward and function in this “new normal” environment. Sisterhood is busy making plans for interesting and fun events that can be done within our current limited circumstances. Keep a look out for flyers and information in the Weekly Email Blast in your email box.
- Membership letters have been sent out. Please join Sisterhood this year to get involved with dedicated women, who work to keep our Congregation vibrant and become a part of creating a strong program that strengthens our lives as a Jewish Community.

- As Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur approach…I would like to weIcome my Temple Tikvah Family to the New Year - 5781.
- It has been a few months since I have reported to you and yes, we are still dealing with this horrendous pandemic - Covid-19. Life goes on...yes, the High Holy Days will come this month as they always do around this time. The Days of Awe, ten days on the Jewish Calendar (Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur and the days in between) in which we reflect on the last year and repent our sins and wrong doings...do the right thing as God always listens.
- September brings new beginnings and we just heard schools will be open. I hope that means our religious school will be too. If so, indoors or outdoors - Brotherhood Representatives will be present that very first day, welcoming the children and schmoozing with the Moms and Dads.
- Brotherhood is always looking for new members. We meet the first Wednesday of every month. Our meetings will continue for now to be ZOOM ones. All men are invited to join our meetings - give it a shot…maybe you’ll like it. The ZOOM LINK will be provided to all members.
- Although we still are planning many activities this year, flexibility and adjustments may occur due to Covid-19. Brotherhood has always supported our Temple in the past and we will continue to do so this year. In addition, On the Marc Sports Talks will continue on ZOOM every Thursday at 4pm. I host this one-hour show; where we simply talk sports, sports, and sports. We share thoughts and opinions, and do 15 minutes of trivia at the end. All are welcome. Look for the ZOOM LINK every Wednesday in the Temple’s Weekly Updates in your email inboxes.

We will be hearing the words of Moses as he prepares the people for entering and living in the land of Israel. Join us as we progress through Moses’ speech and see how this ancient book is still relevant today. No experience or prior knowledge is required. Everyone is welcome.

- We are looking forward to celebrating the HIGH HOLY DAYS, and to the new beginnings that are ahead of us. We are sure we are all in agreement that we are looking forward to the new beginnings with a New Year that will be filled with less stress and anxiety…here is hoping that those who are now sick with the virus will recover quickly, and that we can resume our "normal" lifestyles. It may be a new normal, however let us be hopeful that the eating of apples and honey during this Rosh HaShanah will represent a particularly sweet New Year, which will take us into the future filled with GOOD HEALTH, WONDERFUL MEMORIES, and MUCH JOY.
- Let us remember that everyone's smile is the sunshine on their face, and that everyone's laughter is very contagious.
- As always, anyone who may be interested in joining our Group, which meets the third Monday of the month at 11am in the Temple Library is welcome. If you have any questions, please leave a message for us with Marie in the office, and we will get back to you.
