I’m Amelia, your newsletter editor, here to provide you with a weekly line to all things The North Star and news. We’ll keep you updated about what’s going on in Naperville North, the local area and break down the big stories of the week.

Here are this week's local stories:

First, a celebrity-owned restaurant will be opening in Naperville

Earlier this month, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay announced the opening of his third restaurant, set to open in Naperville. The restaurant, Ramsay’s Kitchen, is scheduled to open later this spring in Downtown Naperville.

The planned location of Ramsay’s Kitchen will take over the space previously occupied by, Ted’s Montana Grill

Ramsay’s Kitchen is part of a group of namesake restaurants named after Ramsay, known for hosting television shows including “Hell’s Kitchen” and “Kitchen Nightmares”. Ramsay is world-renowned for his cooking, having won seventeen Michelin stars for his cooking. The Ramsay’s Kitchen in Naperville would be the third Ramsay’s Kitchen location in the United States, following previous locations in Boston and Las Vegas.

Next, two students from Naperville North and Naperville Central were recently awarded Evans Scholarships.

Jordyn Cleary, a senior at Naperville North and Aubrey Nestoras, a senior at Naperville Central were Evans Scholarship recipients. The scholarship is a four-year, full tuition and housing scholarship for college-bound students.

Cleary plans to study business analytics and Nestoras plans to study psychology in college.

John Kaczkowski, President and CEO of the WGA says, “We are proud to welcome them to the Evans Scholars family.”

This scholarship is sponsored by the WGA and the Evans Scholar Foundation. Applicants must be a golf caddie “regularly and successfully, for a minimum of two years” at the club that sponsors them, be in good academic standing, demonstrate financial need, and “outstanding character.”

Here's what's going on nationally:

Monterey Park Shooting

A gunman opened fire on Jan. 21 at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio in Monterey Park, California, just outside of Los Angeles. Eleven people were killed and at least ten more were injured.

Monterey Park, a town with a large population of Asian-American and Pacific Islander residents, held their first in-person celebration of the Lunar New Year since the pandemic. The shooting happened at the same time of the festival.

The shooter was later identified as a 72-year-old man named Huu Can Tran. He was found dead in a parked van with self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

Police have not identified Tran’s motive, although it is suspected to be due to personal grievances. Police also found hundreds of rounds of ammunition and homemade firearm suppressors in his home.

A former friend of Tran reportedly said he would find “joy and companionship in venues like the Star Ballroom Dance Studio”.
