A Feature On Ryan Smith By Sophia Mosser

At WKHS, Sophomore Ryan Smith has continued to impress and excel in his running career His success has been achieved through hard work and dedicated practice. Spring season began recently, opening up the opportunity for Smith to showcase his progress. Here at WKHS, he is on the leaderboard for the 1600 meter and 3200 meter events and plans on furthering his achievements. Smith talks about some of his accomplishments and what the sport means to him.

When reflecting on the milestones of his running career, Smith says " My biggest accomplishment in running is probably qualifying for the indoor state meet in the 3200. It’s really competitive and mostly made up of seniors and juniors as I was 1/3 sophomores competing. Also to show how competitive it was, my time was 9:23 for the 2 mile which would have gotten 5-6th place in the prior years!"

Smith's success has not been handed to him as he talks about his work ethic. Any sport requires dedication and ambition as Smith shares his strategy: "I’ve gotten to the point I am through consistency and just keep showing up even when it’s hard. I also have gotten where I am through a good mindset. Running is a tough sport, but I know my self worth is not found through a sport, but through God."

Smith's journey has come a long way as he explains how he got started and how he has discover his love for the sport: "I started running in 7th grade while I was playing club soccer at the same time. Both my parents were very good at their sports throughout college and into their early profession so it is just a part of my family."

Although he has had a lot of success so far, Smith does not plan on giving up the sport. He plans on continuing his career as he says "My future goals are to just keep having fun because that ultimately brings success and I also want to continue improving throughout high school and college."
