The Blast City Manager Holstine's Weekly Update | July 26, 2023

National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day Thursday, July 27

National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day is observed each year on July 27th. It is a time to remember as many as 50,000 American troops who died in the conflict, the over 100,000 wounded, and thousands of prisoners of war.

In the Korean War Veterans Memorial, which is located on the National Mall near the west end of the Reflecting Pool, 19 stainless steel statues depict a squad on patrol. The figures represent members of the Air Force, Army, Marines, and Navy from a variety of ethnic backgrounds. The strips of granite and scrubby juniper bushes suggest the rough terrain and the windblown ponchos suggest the harsh weather encountered.

Each year, the President of the United States issues a proclamation announcing July 27th as a day of national observance in honor of Korean War veterans and their families. Thank you to all our veterans for bravely and selflessly serving our country.

5K Run at the Marina is Sold Out, but Support for CORA Still Needed

We were ready to get out the word this week about Connie’s 5K Run & Walk on 8/26, in partnership with CORA (Community Overcoming Relationship Abuse), but learned that maximum capacity for the race was reached over the weekend. The event will be taking place on the morning of Saturday, August 26th at the Brisbane Marina.

This 5K is dedicated to Conchita aka - Connie - loving mother of 4 and preschool director whose life was tragically cut short on May 24, 2021 by her partner. The run is also dedicated to the children of the victims, those silently suffering, and the brave women working to set themselves free from abuse.

While the event has sold out - CORA's fundraising efforts are in full force. Participants can create their individual fundraising page or simply ask friends to support their philanthropic effort.

Call CORA's 24-hour hotline if you need to speak with a counselor: 1-800-300-1080 or e-mail them for help at resources@corasupport.org.

Summertime Habitat Restoration on the Mountain

This past Saturday, 10-15 volunteers joined five Open Space and Ecology Committee members and two San Bruno Mountain Watch Board members. Special thanks to Sustainability Manager Adrienne Etherton and Park & Recreation's Jeff Franco for all of their assistance during these Habitat Restoration Days, and of course, Ariel Cherbowsky Corkidi, Director of SBMW, for being available to lead this important volunteer effort.

These stewardship efforts help protect habitat for the federally-endangered Mission Blue and Callippe Silverspot butterflies and encourage an increased abundance of native wildflowers! The next restoration effort will be coming in late September in the form of Lagoon Cleanup Day (the 2023 cleanup will take place a week later than usual to avoid conflicting with Rosh Hashanah).

Speaking of protecting San Bruno Mountain and its various habitat, David's Schooley's lifelong dedication to the Mountain will be celebrated this Friday at the Brisbane Community Center.

A new display including photographs featuring David and artifacts provided by San Bruno Mountain Watch and residents is currently being readied for the Library. Be sure to stop by the Library's History Room to check out the new exhibit.

West Nile Virus Detected in Dead Crow in Redwood Shores

On Monday, it was reported by the San Mateo County Mosquito and Vector Control District that West Nile Virus was detected in a dead crow collected from the Redwood Shores area of Redwood City. This is their first WNV detection for 2023. See the press release here.

The best way to prevent WNV is to protect yourself from mosquito bites. And remember to always report dead birds to help the District track where West Nile virus is in our county by calling 1-877-WNV-BIRD (1-877-968-2473), or by filling out an online report at westnile.ca.gov.
