What I've Learned... (so far...)

Ryan McCrary | Publicist, Jim Gaffigan stunt double | Kalama, WA | March, 2022

Shoot the ball

One of the best life philosophies I’ve ever heard came from my dad when he was my fourth grade basketball coach: “Shoot the ball before you turn it over”.

My one relationship dealbreaker? Anyone who tries to trick me into eating broccoli or cauliflower. Just… no.

Gonzaga University

I spent nearly 20 years educated or employed by Jesuits. They taught me to be relentlessly curious and never fear asking “Why”. Also how to swear effectively in scholarly settings.

There is nothing quite like a MLB clubhouse. Seeing JT Snow give his young son (nicknamed Snowflake) cotton candy and jolly ranchers and then telling him to go play in Uncle Barry’s (Bonds) Sharper Image massage recliner still makes me laugh.

Flashback to childhood nightmares

Magic Johnson was my most hated player for my most hated team growing up. He destroyed my beloved Portland Trail Blazers over and over. I’ve softened my stance on Magic, but not the Lakers. I know this is irrational, but I’m good with it.

I believe in the transformative power of team sports. This has been put to the test - working with teams that have one winning season every six years will shake anybody.

I disagree on the DH, Crash

I memorized Crash Davis' speech from Bull Durham when I was 17. Took me weeks to get it down. Then I performed it for my church youth group. Nailed it.

Hearing Jim McKay open ABC’s Wide World of Sports with the phrase “Thrill of victory… and the agony of defeat…” inspired me from an early age. I realized much later that I was telling those stories. It was a watershed moment.

I’ve lost my mom and two fiances to cancer. They taught me more about grace and courage than I ever thought possible. I miss them every day.

Second from the right

Coming out of a toxic relationship, I was invited to join a knitting circle at a coffee shop. I brought the combined average age down to about 67. This grandmother pulls a flask out of her pocket, slips it to me and whispers, “It’s Baileys…” Turns out I suck at knitting, but that coffee…

When I win PowerBall, I am not going back to work.

My grandpa repaired antique clocks as a hobby. He had a sign stating “Clocks repaired. While you wait and wait and wait…” Looking back, this taught me that all good things take time, but if you’re truly in a rush, check your cell phone.

The Hoff

Personal reinventions can be tough to achieve. David Hasselhoff is my inspiration. He went from Knight Rider to Baywatch to Baywatch Nights to Baywatch Hawaii. And never forget: Germans love David Hasselhoff. (RIP, Norm)

My Most Unlikely, Yet Rewarding Professional Moments so far...

Get well soon, Coach
  • Worked with ESPN's Dick Vitale at three WCC Basketball Championships. I achieved "Awesome status with a capital 'A', Baby!"
  • Talked with Grant Hill's mom, Janet, while her son was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame
  • Interviewed Greg Maddux after he won his 300th career game
  • Changed an entire basketball rim assembly at halftime of a Gonzaga men's game. Finished with three minutes to spare.
  • Introduced myself and spent three good minutes talking with Vin Scully. Even better than you think.
  • Spent 10 good minutes talking with Bill Raftery before he called the 2017 National Championship game. Onions!
  • Overcame a fear of stammering and public speaking all in one fell swoop, volunteering to broadcast University of San Francisco baseball games. Almost figured it out after 300-plus games.

So That Just Happened...

Mr. Norris requests no foam on his vanilla latte
  • Barry Bonds finally, finally recognized me and acknowledged my existence. He said, "Hey, man... quit leaning on my TV." Special moment.
  • Got mooned by 71-year-old Jack McKeon
  • Got yelled at by Lou Pinella. I stood my ground and he apologized. I told him he was my mom's favorite manager. His response: "Your mom's a lovely woman".
  • Had a ball of ice shatter my driver's side window one cold night in Provo
  • During a pit stop at a Pepperdine basketball game, I looked to my left and there was Jerry West and to my right there was LL Cool J. Surrounded by The Logo and Ladies Love Cool James. Nice.
  • My last day working at Pepperdine I was standing in line at Starbucks behind Chuck Norris. I turned to check and see if anyone else noticed and Pamela Anderson was behind me.
  • While hosting an NCAA Men's Basketball Regional a monitor caught fire during a game. The teams played on.
  • Got bus left twice while working the Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks. Those were long, cold walks.
  • Was in a postgame interview scrum after an MLS game and I sneezed. Loudly. Questions stopped, all eyes on me. David Beckham looked at me and said "Bless You".
Thanks, Becks

Favorite Teams & Memories

A century in the making
  • As an undergrad at Gonzaga I enjoyed a front row seat for the start of a basketball dynasty. I was there when the Elite Eight run began in 1999. The Slipper Still Fits!
  • Promoted the University of San Francisco baseball team when it made its first ever NCAA Regional appearance... in its 100th season
  • In sports PR, you always remember "your" first team. "Mine" was the 1998 USD volleyball team. It won the WCC championship, cracked the top-25 and went to the NCAA Tournament behind first team All-American (and future Olympian) Petia Yanchulova.
  • Chronicling two Gonzaga Final Four trips in five years
  • Publicized the USF volleyball team when it went from a 2-win season to the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament berth
  • Watched Portland Pilot All-American Christine Sinclair score a first half hat trick vs. USF.
  • Saw Gonzaga All-American Adam Morrison score 42 points, including 24 in the first half, at USF in a front of an over-capacity crowd which brought the fire marshal.
