Joey Crouch Character Analysis

In Rotters by Daniel Kraus the character Joey Crouch is a very curious character. I chose this character because he is the main character and he goes through the most through out the book. I like this character because he goes through a lot of mental and physical stress in so little time and still refuses to let his grades drop. I think me and this character have a lot in common when it comes to go through large amounts of stress but still not letting my grades fall. Joey Crouch's traits of extreme curiosity, bad hygiene, and will to never give up is what is going to effect him the most in the end.

Joey Crouch has an extreme amount of curiosity. His curiosity is what has caused him to find out what his dad does and now so does Joey. Joey staked out his dad snuck into his dad's truck and drove with him to his destination just to find out he robbed graves for a living. When he Got caught by his dad and found out his dad was a grave robber he was riding in the back of the truck and was thinking "My father is a grave robber, I told myself, over and over and over- the only garbage he carried was carrion. I hoped the horror of it would diminish with each repetition, but instead it overtook me." These examples show that if he wouldn't of wondered what his father did so bad he would of never been put in that situation. I think it hurt Joey because he already had a lot going on at school and with his mother's death just to add grave robbing to his agenda.

Joey Crouch's character also has really bad hygiene. His hygiene is one of the reasons he gets picked on in school so often. The first student he talked to in school actually told him he stunk. His teacher Gottschalk makes him stand in front of the class sometimes to use as an example for his hygiene. "Our first unit was on skin and the endocrine system, and almost every day I was called to the front of the class to be used as a real-life model. He had a telescoping metal pointer and sometimes struck my arm or neck or face hard enough to make me flinch. "Notice the damage to multiple layers of epithelial tissues", he said, prodding a patch of pimples."

By the end of this novel I think the character will be stronger. He'll probably end up becoming a grave digger but he will be more confident in himself. He'll be stronger physically to so that will help. I think if this stuff does happen that it will be good for him. By the end of the story I think he'll be a whole different person hopefully for the better
