The History of OnStar

OnStar Services: Delivered via Global Positioning
  • Started as a location-based technology developed by a team at ExtremeBlue, an IBM internship program for graduate students in software development and business administration.
  • GM introduced the service in 1996 as an option on some Cadillac models. Early OnStar consoles came with a handset; the hands-free, three-button console became standard in 2001.
  • Analog initially - transitioned to digital in 2008 which cut off 500,000 subscribers; Under pressure, GM offered an upgrade package for older vehicles in in 2011
  • Most systems today are dual mode, capable of both analog and digital.

OnStar offers a variety of in-vehicle services that are delivered via CDMA, a "spread spectrum" technology designed to transmit digital radio signals between a wireless device and a base station. CDMA technology was developed by the military over 30 years ago. Basic OnStar services include:

  • Automatic crash response
  • Emergency services
  • Stolen vehicle assistance
  • Roadside assistance
  • Hands-free calling
