Open source water-energy simulator operation IMPACTS TO the water system

1. Introduction

This video explains how water management intervention in one part of the water system affects the operation of other parts of the water system as well as the energy system. For this purpose, we constructed an integrated water and energy network.

The water network consists of two reservoirs, two potable water demand nodes and two irrigation nodes. The energy network consists of 3 buses, 2 hydropower generators, 2 thermal generators and 2 energy demands. Both networks are connected via a link between turbine nodes in the water model and generator nodes in the energy model.

To demonstrate the interactions between different assets within the water network as well as between the water and the energy network, we simulate four different water management scenarios. Scenario 1 is a business-as-usual scenario in which the network operates as designed. In Scenario 2, water demand in an irrigation node in the upper part of the water network is increased 10-fold causing a reduction in water available in the hydroelectric reservoir in the downstream part of the network. In Scenarios 3 and 4, operating rules for hydroelectric reservoirs and water abstractions are modified to reduce water demand curtailment and maintain adequate power supply. Results from all four scenarios demonstrate trade-offs between water and energy sectors.

As indicated on the home page of the training you should have already created an account.

2. Intended learning outcomes

In this video you will learn:

  • How operating rules in reservoirs are used to change water availability for consumption and hydropower production
  • How water management decisions upstream impact on the operation of the assets downstream in the water network
  • How the management of the water network affects the operation of the energy network in the integrated water-energy model

The video also has an in-depth explanation of the water and energy systems, their inputs and their outputs.

3.Tutorial Video

The video below demonstrates how changing parameters in the different models can impact the operation of the integrated system.
