2022 State of the Coast Guard Address Reflecting on Mission Support team accomplishments in 2021

This year CG-1 Team made progress in creating conditions more supportive of a diverse and inclusive workforce through expanded support for Affinity Groups; reestablishment of the Inclusive Leadership, Excellence and Diversity (ILEAD) Council; development of D&I competencies for mentors in the Coast Guard’s Mentoring Program; updated hair, grooming, and tattoo standards; introduction of a new D&I Foundations training course; and more. We take pride in these achievements, but we must recognize our diversity and inclusion journey continues, often led by Mission Support teams. Bravo Zulu CG-1 Team!
In 2021, the Assistant Commadant for C4IT/Chief Information Officer Team (CG-6) has been working tirelessly to roll out the DoD365 Microsoft Office applications, including Coast Guard Teams. These game-changing applications will provide us with convenient and easy-to-use tools for collaboration and conferencing needs, keeping our workforce connected even in difficult or degraded conditions. Bravo Zulu, CG-6 Team!
Acquisition of offshore patrol cutters is one of the Coast Guard’s highest investment priorities. The Acquisition Directorate (CG-9) has made great strides in the effort to provide up-to-date assets that will enhance current and future mission effectiveness.
Recently, the Coast Guard and Eastern Shipbuilding Group began cutting steel for the third Offshore Patrol Cutter (OPC) in Panama City, FL, with the construction of the first two OPCs well underway. Meanwhile, as signified by a symbolic ground-breaking ceremony in early September 2021, programs within the Assistant Commandant for Engineering and Logistics (CG-4) began planning for the OPC’s first homeport, which will be located at Base Los Angeles/Long Beach. Bravo Zulu, CG-9 and CG-4 Teams!
The Director Of Operational Logistics (DOL) Team coordinated another outstanding contingency response, this time for Hurricane Ida.
DOL mobilized the entire Mission Support organization, from Service Centers and Logistics Centers across the Service, to Damage Assessment Teams in the field, to program experts at Coast Guard Headquarters. DOL and Base New Orleans personnel integrated efforts with Legal Support Teams, Family Assistance Teams, and Mobile Medical Units to ensure our Coast Guard members and families were taken care of.
This excellent work, all in support of the Operational Commander, ensured the entire Service was aligned in support provided to the field. Bravo Zulu, DOL Teams!
In August 2021, through the efforts of the CG-1 Team, the newly refreshed Coast Guard Mentoring Program reached 1,000 enrollees four months ahead of schedule and enrollment continues to rise steadily. This program is a sincere investment in the personal and professional growth of our people, providing short and long-term mentoring in a variety of formats. Bravo Zulu, CG-1 Team!
In 2020, the September 2020 Environmental Risk Assessment identified the need to stabilize deteriorating lead-based paint in Coast Guard homes.
This year, teams from the Assistant Commandants for Engineering and Logistics (CG-4) and Human Resources (CG-1), as well as the Director Of Operational Logistics (DOL) have led efforts to ensure that Coast Guard housing units are free from environmental health risks, keeping our military members and their families safe. Bravo Zulu, CG-1, CG-4 and DOL Teams!
In fall 2021, we celebrated a rare triple-commissioning ceremony for our three newest Fast Response Cutters (FRC): CGCs Myrtle Hazard, Oliver Henry, and Frederick Hatch, at Coast Guard Forces Micronesia/Sector Guam.
These new Sentinel-class cutters are a key part of our modernized Coast Guard, helping meet the Service’s needs as our mission becomes more and more global in nature. Bringing these critical components of our offshore fleet into service took extraordinary, integrated efforts from members across the Coast Guard, particularly from the Mission Support professionals in our Acquisitions Directorate (CG-9).
Currently, two of the six FRCs destined for Patrol Forces Southwest Asia (PATFORSWA) have arrived with two more en route, allowing the Coast Guard to maintain a strong global presence. Bravo Zulu, CG-9 Teams!
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the FORCECOM “Modernized Ready Learning” team made strides to bring the training component of our organization into the virtual world. New classes and trainings were migrated to a virtual format, allowing more training flexibility for our workforce. Bravo Zulu, FORCECOM Team!
In September 2021, Coast Guard Medical Officers provided humanitarian aid to those impacted by the 7.2 magnitude earthquake which occurred in Haiti. Coast Guard Medical Officers are often on the front lines of public health and safety. Bravo Zulu CG-1 Teams!
The Coast Guard Academy Team officially broke ground on the $23 million Maritime Center of Excellence (MCOE). The MCOE will offer interactive high-tech classroom and make spaces for a variety of educational and leadership development courses, as well as modern boat maintenance facilities. This will be the Academy’s first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified building, allowing the CGA to lead the way in education AND climate resiliency efforts. Bravo Zulu, CGA Team!
In fall 2021, the CG-1 and CG-9 Teams launched the new military health system’s MHS GENESIS, enabling the Service to transition from paper records to a state-of-the-art system with an impressive array of benefits for both patients and health-care providers. Included in the launch was a new patient portal that empowers patients, allowing access to their doctor’s notes and the ability to request prescriptions. MHS GENESIS also enabled Coast Guard healthcare providers to seamlessly exchange patient records with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and many civilian specialists. Bravo Zulu, CG-1 and CG-9 Teams!

Thank You Mission Support Team!
