WEEK 9, TERM 1, 24 MARCH 2023

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Thank you to the 50 parents who participated in the our P and C Meeting last week via Zoom. The focus for the evening was a presentation on our excellent 2022 HSC results. Our next P and C meeting will be in May.

Our P and C  Garden and Grounds Day is on Saturday 1 April. Parents and students are encouraged to participate to help improve the gardens and grounds. Students who participate will receive a participation signature for their Minerva Award. Please see the notice in this edition of The Torch.

The P and C are organising a Community Fair for Saturday 12 August from 10am - 4pm. It will be held in the Central Quad and Hall. Unlike previous years parents will not be cooking food except for a Sausage Sizzle. Three or four food trucks will be on site to sell food and coffee. There will be various stalls operated by parents including a cake stall, tombola, pre-loved clothes, trash and treasure and others. Pony rides and farm animals will also be on the school oval with other activities. Our students will provide music and dance performances. If the weather is good we could also use the Multi-Courts for performances and other activities. There will be a number of student run clubs that might also like to use the day for their promotion eg FRED, SRC, Robotics. Information on how to volunteer will be in future editions of The Torch and also discussed at our next P and C meeting in May.

Kind regards

Justin Briggs - Principal

2023 HGHS RENT-A-PREFECT

On Tuesday the 7 March, we had our annual Rent-a-Prefect Day! This involved our wonderful Prefects being auctioned for rent by other students. The services that our Prefects provided the successful bidders included dedicated homework help, spirited serenading, and a Westfield’s lunch run!

Our Rent-a-Prefect auction was held the week before. We had our very own professional auctioneer in Dr Briggs, who sold off all our Prefects who were dressed up as famous icons such as Dora and Diego, Andrea and the Chipmunks, Tom and Jerry, and more!

It’s worth mentioning that our Prefect group ‘The Golden Prefecta’ (Harry Potter Trio) was auctioned off for a record-breaking high bid of $200 by a group of over fifteen Year 8 students! Absolutely increds!

Big thank you to our Year 12 band ‘Maraki’ who banged out a phenomenally energetic live performance of Kelly Clarkson’s ‘Breakaway’.

Overall we managed to raise over $600! All funds raised was donated to the Make-a-Wish Foundation, with the hope of bringing to life the wishes of children with critical illnesses.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of our Rent-a-Prefect event and also to those who came to watch!

SRC HARMONY DAY

On Tuesday 14 March, the SRC hosted Harmony Day 2023. This year’s Harmony Day was a huge success, with dress-up, a photo booth, and a huge bake sale. Many students brought in food or wore traditional dress to celebrate this unifying event, donating and purchasing to help support the Indigenous Literacy Fund.

At lunch, hundreds of students swarmed the gym, buying cultural food and badges, as well as taking photos at the photo booth. There were so many different foods available to try, and all the students loved this amazing day.

The support from the school community was amazing, with many students and teachers purchasing delicious food and celebratory badges. The total money raised for the Indigenous Literacy Fund was over $1250! This is a massive achievement, and we can’t wait to see if we managed to beat Cheltenham Girls in the fundraising race that took place this Harmony Day!

A huge thankyou to all students and parents who helped make this day as special as it was.

quality teaching rounds

At HGHS one type of professional learning a number of teachers from across all faculties are undertaking is Quality Teaching Rounds (QTR). Led by Mackenzie Carroll and Lara Sholl, QTRs are high-impact, evidence-based professional development designed around the Quality Teaching Framework that make a significant difference for teachers and students. It involves ongoing collaborative discussion around current pedagogical research, a series of lesson observations and collaborative reflection on best practice. QTR empowers teachers to enrich student learning through collaborative, teacher-driven analysis. https://qtacademy.edu.au/research/ QTR improves student outcomes by up to 25%, improves the quality of teaching, lifts teacher morale and positively impacts school culture.

outdoor Activities Heat Policy Sport, PDHPE and other activities

Due to extreme weather recently, a school policy has been created.

Once the temperature reaches 35 degrees teachers may choose to cancel an outdoor activity based on concerns for students' health. There may be instances where there is suitable shade for an activity where the teacher uses their professional judgement to proceed. Example, shotput in a shaded area where students are seated. It is a requirement for all students to be wearing a hat for all outdoor activities particularly in PDHPE.

There will also be occasions where students are encouraged to stay in classrooms during lunchtime if temperatures become extreme.

2023 SRC Induction Ceremony

On the 2nd of March, the HGHS 2023 SRC Induction was held, with parents invited to attend for the first time after Covid struck.

The event started off with amazing performances played by Symphonic Band as newly elected SRCs entered the hall to meet a group of supporting HGHS students and parents. Lovely speeches created and read by the head of SRC, Rosanna Mar-Young, and the deputy head of SRC, Annabelle Zhang, followed soon after, touching the hearts of many SRCs, teachers, and audience. Preceding this, newly elected SRCs were presented with their badges and took a pledge to always strive to improve our school community and become role models for the students of HGHS.

After a long morning full of heartfelt speeches, thank you to all the amazing teachers who aided us along the way, and the wonderful performances from Symphonic Band, including an instrumental arrangement of “Mambo”, a morning tea was organised for SRC members and parents to enjoy. While enjoying the amazing biscuits and beverages (including make-your-own-coffee-or-tea), SRC reflected upon the stunning morning and took the opportunity to thank the teachers.

Overall, on behalf of SRC, a big thank you to Ms Carroll for aiding SRC with every event and occasion as a coordinator, Dr Briggs for your unyielding support, Dr Green for you help with every event SRC has held so far, and to the head and deputy of SRC, Rosanna and Annabelle for being an amazing pair who has so far led SRC with bravery, compassion, and humour. Thank you to everyone who made this amazing day happen and SRC cannot wait to see what the year ahead brings!

HGHS ‘Harmonies of Cooking’ Recipe Book

As part of our HGHS celebration of Harmony Week, we are compiling a culturally rich recipe book of the favourite dishes of our school community. There is a link on the Sentral Noticeboard and on the Library Home Page for students to submit their favourite family recipe. This provides a simple template which will only take about 10 minutes to complete with no formatting required. The recipe can be part of your cultural heritage or it can be from a completely different cuisine that your family enjoys.

We would love your support in the creation of this recipe book by either encouraging your child to submit a recipe or even submitting one yourself on the link below. The deadline for recipes is Friday, 31st March

https://www.tasteofharmony.org.au/eventhub/public/view-cookbook.php?id=RdG50a

We will let you know when the completed book is available on the HGHS website. Looking forward to sharing some culinary harmonies with you all.

PROFESSIONAL LEARNING

Art Club Wednesday lunch (fortnightly)

Year 7 and 8 students eagerly participated Art Club held for the first-time Wednesday Week 6 at lunchtime. It was a race to be the first student to enter the room as numbers were capped. We had a very impressive turn-out as we were nearly filled to capacity.

Students explored a very free approach to art making. A large piece of paper laid on the desks with objects randomly positioned for the students to use for inspiration. They had many different types of drawing materials to use and explore various mark making techniques.

This is a fortnightly event open to all Year 7 and 8 students who are wanting to develop their own creativity outside the classroom.

HGHS & NBHS SRC Afternoon Tea

On Friday the 10th of March, the Hornsby and Normanhurst SRC collaborated in a planning meeting held in our school hall. The meeting was successfully led by our stunning head of SRC, Rosanna, and Sidharth (Normanhurst head of SRC), along with all our amazing execs.

The meeting kicked off with our iconic icebreakers, followed by an overall discussion session and planning our next inter-school events.

Many bonds were formed, ideas shared, and fun times had as we brainstormed for our upcoming movie night event. The SRC’s then split into different groups to discuss ideas and develop further leadership skills.

The meeting concluded with several casual conversations over light refreshments including snacks and cordial. We shared many laughs, and all the students had a wonderful time.

A massive thank you to our lovely SRC Coordinator Ms Carroll for planning and supervising the event, and to Normanhurst SRC and coordinator for joining us in this meeting!

Wind Ensemble & Symphonic Band Combine

The Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble made the most of an unfortunate event last week when the Wind Ensemble conductor was unwell. We took the opportunity to combine as an ensemble of over 100 students playing some very challenging music. Thank you to all the Wind Ensemble students who pushed themselves to take risks and embark on some serious sight reading, thank you to the Symphonic Band for leading the way through the repertoire and lastly thank you to everyone in attendance for your flexibility and enthusiasm. The picture below doesn’t quite capture the energy in the room but gives you an insight into our fun rehearsal!

MUSIC RECITAL

The Music Department is holding our second annual Music Recital for soloists and duos, on Friday 31 March in the School Hall from 6-7.30pm. Everyone is welcome to come and watch the talents of some of the school's finest musicians.

Garden and Grounds Day SATURDAY 1 April 8am -10:30am

Due to the wet summer and the fact we have not been allowed under the COVID restrictions to hold a Garden and Grounds Day for the last twelve months there are lots of weeds in the garden. Tasks include weeding the outdoor gym and around the CLC, trimming the hedge along Edgeworth David and spreading mulch on the gardens throughout the school. Cleaning the school fence and path along Edgeworth David and removing weeds is another big job.

The MEETING PLACE will be out the front of the School where you can and then sign on for HGHS records.

In the event that more than 30 people attend we will split into two groups.

The TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT you will need to bring are:

• gardening gloves, hat/sunscreen, solid footwear (shoes/boots, not sandals) and appropriate clothing.

• Weeding tools

• Buckets, rags, sponges with light scourers, and a bit of detergent

• Rakes (spreading mulch) and brooms (cleaning up)

• Wheelbarrow if you have one (for transporting mulch)

• If you have a hedge trimmer or shears, it would be useful to bring them too

Please bring a bottle of water to prevent dehydration.

We will pack-up and clean up and then finish with a morning tea around 10am in the COLA provided by the school canteen.

Please note the 8am start – this is to avoid the heat. If you cannot get there by 8, don’t worry, just turn up as soon as you can, and scan the QR code and then sign on inside the front door of the School.

Please note that we will go ahead unless it is REALLY raining, the wet ground makes weeding much easier. If we do decide to call it off, we will send you an e-mail by Friday afternoon.

For new parents and students this is a great way to meet other parents and students.

Looking forward to seeing you!

Robert Dyer and Pam Van Der Vlies (P and C Grounds Co-ordinators)
