Volleyball Begins Year 4-0
The Colby Volleyball team opened their 2022 season with a 3-1 win Tuesday night against St. Joseph's College before entering the weekend as hosts of the Colby Invite Tournament. The Mules swept away the competition (UMPI, Gordon, Mount Holyoke) on their way to matching the opening record from a year ago, a perfect 4-0 to start the season.
First-year LJ Grant led the team in kills on the week, posting 44 across four games, including 16 against Gordon. Grant also led the team in service aces with seven on the week, while Sydney Sick led the team at the net with 74 assists from the setter position.
Men's Soccer Tops Thomas, MMA in First Week of Action
In front of a packed hillside, Colby hosted cross-town rival Thomas College on Tuesday, defeating the Terriers 2-0 to open the 2022 campaign. The Mules hit the road for the weekend, opening NESCAC play Saturday at Wesleyan (loss 3-4) before returning to Maine to play another non-conference match at Maine Maritime Academy (win 5-1).
After the 2-1 week, five different goal scorers got on the board led by NESCAC's leading scorer from a year ago, Josh Rubin (3 goals). Sophomore Mario Simoes also tallied three goals, including the first score in both the Wesleyan and MMA matchups.
Women's Soccer Routes Thomas, Falls to Wesleyan
Before traveling to Middletown Saturday to open NESCAC play against Wesleyan (0-3 loss), the Mules opened their season at home Wednesday night against their Waterville neighbors from Thomas College. Colby put eight goals into the back of the net against the Terriers, the highest single game tally since the Mules scored nine against UMF in the 2018 season. Holding a one-goal lead late in the first half, first-year Jayden Liebman tallied two scores in 24 seconds to put the Mules in front 3-0 at the break.
Other goal scorers on the night were Kaleigh Quinn (2), Kylie Thorp, Jackie Portogallo, Jane Maguire, and Selah Barrett.
Field Hockey Scores Early and Often Against UMF, Falls to Wesleyan
Scoring the most goals in a contest since reaching double-digits against UMF in 2018, the Mules knocked seven goals into the back of the cage against the Beavers Wednesday night. Sophomore Lillian Kistner tallied a hat trick, while Jackie Hill (2 goals), Kaitlyn Smith, and Claire Welch also got on the board.
In Saturday's setback against Wesleyan (loss 1-3), Kistner scored her fourth goal of the season and has already surpassed her season total from a year ago.
Cross Country Opens with Annual CBB Class Race
After a tune up Tuesday against Thomas College at Quarry Road (unscored event), the Men's and Women's Cross Country teams took to the course at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester, Maine for the Annual CBB Class Race. The event was hosted by Bates.
The men's team won both the FY/SO race (led by Hayden Baily in first) and the JR/SR race (led by Tyler Morris in first and Ben Mellor in Second). Other top-10 performers were as follows:

Golf Opens the Season at Middlebury
The Golf team opened the season at the Duke Nelson Invitational held on the Ralph Myhre Golf Course on the campus of Middlebury College. The Mules placed 23rd as a team, while the event was won by RPI. Sophomore Nick Stapleton moved up 22 spots after day one by shooting a round of 74 with four birdies, cracking the top-100. First-year Ryan Harper had a solid day 2 as well, shooting a round of 81.
