Sim News Brief Newsletter of the ECU BSOM interprofessional Clinical Simulation Program

Winter 2022

The Interprofessional Clinical Simulation Program received full accreditation from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare in Teaching & Education!

Thank you to everyone who contributed to our application, participated in the site survey, and continues to promote our mission of excellence in clinical care through high-quality, simulation-based education!

Announcements

Thank you to the ECU Parents Fund for sponsoring the purchase of a portable slit lamp eye examination device! BSOM students, PA students, and emergency medicine residents will use this to learn anatomy and to practice detailed eye examinations.

BSOM’s Emergency Medicine Interest Group (EMIG) held the annual Interprofessional Trauma Emergency Assessment and Management (I-TEAM) Day. Physician Assistant students joined medical students for skills sessions, a mock mass casualty triage scenario, and team building.

VMC EastCare continues quarterly education for their staff that includes skills and high-fidelity scenarios and offers an airway course for new hires.

BSOM Simulation is collaborating with Vidant Health Office of Quality to pilot a central venous access course for Advanced Practice Professionals.

ECU Media Services videorecorded Chancellor Rogers in the Clinical Simulation Center for the inaugural ECU Health video. BSOM medical students participated in the session.

The ICSP, in collaboration with the Student National Medical Association, and M2 medical student organizers, tele-transmitted a simulated case scenario to participants for their annual conference.

BSOM M2 students participated in clinical application scenarios where they had the opportunity to apply their knowledge to assess, diagnose, and treat acutely ill patients.

Dr. Bennett, Dr. Rodriguez, Dr. Robey and Jessica Cringan attended a simulation conference at Elon University that emphasized the latest technology and emerging trends in the field of simulation.

Regional and Military Activity

BSOM Simulation continues quarterly training with the 2nd Marine Airwing focusing on tactical combat casualty care.

The MV-22 Osprey Military Transport Simulator has been moved to a new Ragged Edge Solution military training site that will provide a more austere and realistic training environment. Special thanks to Ragged Edge Solutions for donating a trailer for the Osprey and for their collaboration in creating programs for military prolonged field care.

The mobile Healthcare Simulation Unit will be returning to the road this spring as VMC Pediatric Trauma is restarting their grant related educational activities for training in Eastern NC.
