Mule Weekly Recap May 16, 2022

Women's Lacrosse Moves on to Sweet 16

Despite exiting the NESCAC tournament in the semifinal round, the 8th-ranked Mules not only had an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, but they had a first round bye as they waited for their opponent. The United States Merchant Marine Academy defeated Springfield College on Saturday to earn the right to face Colby on Mayflower Hill Sunday.

Colby's Defense, led by All-American Sarah Stark (12)

Building leads against the Mariners of 8-0 after the first quarter, 14-0 at halftime, and 19-0 after three quarters, focus was on the explosive offense of the Mules. The defense, however, was the real story, creating turnovers, converting quickly and efficiently on clears, and limiting quality opportunities. USMMA touted the nation's third-highest scorer (Jessie Wohrer entered the game with 91 goals on the season) to three shots on goal the entire contest, and the only scoring from the Mariners came after the contest was clearly in hand.

Colby cruised to a 20-4 victory, moving on to the Sweet 16 next weekend.

The Mules head to Middlebury, Vt. to face William Smith College on Saturday. The game can be streamed with the link below.

The winner will face the winner of Middlebury/Chicago for a chance at the 2022 Final Four.

Baseball Wins Friday, Finishes 3rd in NESCAC

After sweeping Wesleyan University a week ago in the opening round of the NESCAC tournament, the Mules traveled to Hartford, Conn. for the remaining games in the NESCAC Championship.

Despite missing several key players due to COVID-19 protocols, the Mules faced off against the best in the conference ready to make waves.

In the first game on Friday, Colby jumped out to an early 3-1 lead against Hamilton off Clint Flippo's first home run of the year. Pitcher Nicholas Thompson went six innings on the mound, striking out seven, as the Mules defeated the Continentals 6-4.

In the winner's bracket meeting Saturday against Middlebury, Colby kept pace with the high-scoring offense of the Panthers, falling 14-16 with the tying run at the plate in the ninth inning. Cole Palmeri hit his 9th home run of the season in the fifth inning.

Meeting up again with Hamilton Saturday afternoon in the double elimination tournament, the Mules were in striking distance in the seventh inning down 3-5. Hamilton's offense came alive and kept the pressure on, scoring four in the seventh and two more in the eighth to separate for an 11-3 win.

Colby finishes the season 24-13, and exited the tournament in third place. The Mules established many major benchmarks for their program, including several key offensive categories and reaching a win-total never seen this century.

Track & Field Narrows in on NCAA Championships

Fiona Mejico
