Romeo and Juliet: Act 1, Scene 1 Created by Noah Burkhart

A. Explain Sampson and Gregory's relationship and feelings towards the Montague family - Sampson and Gregory genuinely believe that the Montagues are similar to dogs, and utterly despise them. They try to pick fights and insult the Montagues as often as they can.

B. Why do Benvolio and Tybalt fight in the street? - They fight because they hate each other as Benvolio is a Montague and Tybalt is a Capulet. They also fight because after Sampson bit his thumb, he started arguing with Montagues, when Benvolio and Tybalt arrive and start fighting.

C. What does the Prince announce after the fight? - Because they fight so often and disturb the peace, if the Montagues and Capulets ever fight in the streets again, they will be executed.

D. Explain why Romeo is feeling melancholy (sad)? - Romeo is melancholy because he is in love with a woman who is not in love with him.

E. What does Romeo's conversation with Benvolio reveal about Benvolio's character/personality? - Benvolio is revealed to be a caring person, because he tries to help Romeo to feel happier.
