March's Beanstack Reading Challenges

TW's Annual Iditaread Reading Challenge: The annual Iditarod race of over 1,100 miles can take from 7 to 14 days to complete. On odd years, mushers take the Southern Route which includes 26 total checkpoints within that timeframe. We are accepting a similar challenge in reading. We call it the Iditaread Challenge. Grade levels will be assigned a veteran and a rookie musher this year and will attempt to read to match their musher's arrivals to each of this year's race checkpoints. Each student’s goal will be to read a chapter, a story, or a short book for each race checkpoint reached by their musher. Students will keep track of their progress by logging their reading into Beanstack. Although badges state that they are based on "books" read, they can be earned by chapters or stories read. Either will count. (PK-5th)

Animals Across America: Take a tour of the different animals and habitats across America in this reading challenge! The four Short Stacks will transport you to the wilds of the West, the diverse prairies and forests of the Midwest, the rocky coasts of the Northeast, and the sunny swamps of the South, and introduce you to the animals that call those habitats home. Log all your time spent reading the stories to earn badges showing some of the animals you meet along the way! (3rd-5th Gr.)

Women's History Month: Celebrate Women’s History Month! Log your reading and complete activities to earn badges throughout the challenge. (All Ages)

NCAA Readers Become Leaders

FWISD has partnered with the NCAA and Fort Worth Sports Commission to bring back the NCAA Readers Become Leaders Program. This reading incentive program offers prizes at the school, classroom, and student levels. Tanglewood is registered and ready to earn the trophy in this school vs. school competition for all FWISD elementary campuses.

The links below have a slide presentation for you to learn about the program, a short video of last year's award ceremony/event, and a link to information about the Beanstack Tracker app. The Beanstack Tracker app makes it so easy to enter the reading minutes for our younger students.

The program runs for 10 weeks, from January 23 to April 2. The top three campuses earn a special field trip to view the NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championships open practice in Fort Worth in April where the top school will be revealed.

So far, Tanglewood students have read over 302,440 minutes over the 5 weeks

We still have 5 weeks left in the program. Reading data is pulled from MyOn, Lexia (Core5), and Beanstack. All TW students (PK-5th) are eligible to participate. Parents can log reading from home via the Beanstack Tracker app.

Visiting Author, Niki Lenz

3rd-5th grade students will soon get to meet and learn from author, Niki Lenz. She has written two books, including one that was a 2020-2021 Texas Bluebonnet Award Nominee.

When she's not working on a new book, she loves traveling, cooking, spending time with her kids, and event planning. And of course she loves to read!

Bluebonnet Club Luncheon

In this year's Bluebonnet Club Luncheon, 22 Tanglewood students were awarded certificates, a special lunch from Chick-fil-A, cake, and special brag tags. They also participated in the state-wide voting process to help determine the winner of the Texas Bluebonnet Award, which is always chosen by our Texas students

Battle of the Books

Students are nearly finished preparing for FWISD's annual Battle of the Books competition. We will return to TCU for the district competition this year on May 16th.

The TW competition is for 3rd-5th grade students. They'll read all 8 books for their grade level, submit their notes after they finish each book, & complete an A.R. quiz.

All 8 books should be read, note packets submitted, and A.R. quizzes completed by March 24th. Students meeting these requirements will be invited to participate in the campus competition on March 31st to determine who will represent TW at the district competition.

TW's 1,000 Books Before Kinder

TW PK students and younger siblings of TW students are welcome to join us in the library each Wednesday at 2:30 for storytime and an activity.

The goal of the program is to read 1,000 books before they reach Kindergarten. Tracking is easily done on paper logs or through the Beanstack app.

We will take a photo of you at each 100 book milestone and your child will receive a certificate upon completing the program.

First Graders Received a Special Visit & Reading from Guest Author, Giovanna McBride

She stopped by the library to donate a signed copy of her book for our students to check out! Several of our SLA students were on hand to accept her gift, wow!!
