Old Post Office Gateway to the north isles of shetland

The Old Post Office, Gutcher, Yell, Shetland

Welcome to The Old Post Office, a newly renovated Bed & Breakfast on the peaceful island of Yell in the Shetland Islands.

Anne and Peter Dobbing (and friends!) have created a 'home from home' for travellers to explore the most northerly islands of the United Kingdom.

Situated at the northern end of Yell, right next to the ferry for Unst and Fetlar, The Old Post Office is the perfect base for visitors to the North Isles of Shetland.

The guest rooms we call the Muckle Haa (Shetland dialect for 'big house') are now available for bookings. Newly refurbished, complete with a spacious wetroom and shower, the Muckle Haa is insulated and cosy, with tea and coffee-making facilities. It also has a separate entrance and access to the garden. Freesat TV and wifi are also available.

Included in your stay at The Old Post Office:

A hearty Shetland breakfast with vegetarian preferences welcome

All bacon and sausages are from RSPCA/SSPCA monitored farms

Cereals, drop scones, fruit juices, porridge and fresh fruit with tea, coffee and hot chocolate included

Ample car parking and storage for bikes

The Old Post Office is a non-smoking home, for the comfort of residents and guests.

The Old Post Office can be found opposite the Gutcher Ferry Terminal on the island of Yell in Shetland. Shetland has more than 100 islands altogether, but Yell is the second largest after the Mainland, with a population of about 900 people.

Driving through Yell, you might have had the impression of a wild, lonely, desolate place, but our island is a thriving and vibrant cultural centre, home to artists, musicians and craftspeople. We bid you Helsin ('welcome' in Shetland dialect) and we hope you have a wonderful holiday here.

Peter and I first came to Shetland in 2003 and actually stayed at The Old Post Office during our holiday, entertained by the previous owners, Lawrence and Margaret Tulloch. We are both teachers by profession and Peter is a musician and composer who has been inspired to write for a variety of media since we settled here in 2012.

We are both proud to say that we welcome all nationalities as guests here, and if you are visiting from outside the UK, we can help French, Italian, Polish and German with translation if necessary.

We have lived in The Old Post Office since September 2012 and we have been working hard to refurbish the building so that it can be used again as accommodation for travellers, hoping to give them a similar experience to our own of the peace and beauty of these islands.

We both love nature and animals and we do have three dogs of our own (Bella, Missy and Richi) who are friendly, quiet and love to be petted. They are all rescue dogs from various places. We also have a black cat called Katy, who loves visitors; also we have chickens and a caddy lamb/sheep called Sven, who is also very friendly.

If you are bringing your dog to stay with you here, you are welcome to let him/her exercise in the field next to the garden but please tell us first so we can make sure Sven is elsewhere. We have provided a 'dog poo bin' next to the field gate for owners to pick up their own dog's waste, so that the field stays hygienic.

We also have about twenty visiting ducks and the five Gutcher Geese who come for breakfast every day, so it's a lively community here!
