ITA Senior Player of the Year Award & ITA National Player of the Year
Eliot Spizzirri from the University of Texas has been named the 2023 ITA Senior Player of the Year and ITA National Player of the Year.
Spizzirri has put together one of the most impressive seasons in the history of Texas Tennis and among the best to this point in college tennis history. Named the 2023 Big 12 Player of the Year and a first-team All-Big 12 selection in both singles and doubles, Spizzirri was the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Singles Championship and the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Doubles Championship.
In 2023, he has led the Longhorns to a 26-4 record, the Big 12 regular season championship, and the program’s first appearance in the final of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship.
Spizzirri finished the season 36-5 overall in singles and 20-1 in dual matches, all of which have been at the No. 1 line. He became the first Longhorn since 2015 to ascend to No. 1 in the ITA singles rankings on Feb. 8 and has maintained that since. Spizzirri is 27-2 against all ranked singles players, including 16-0 against the top-50, and 11-0 versus the top-25.
In doubles, he and Cleeve Harper finished 28-14 overall and 19-9 in dual matches, all of those at No. 1, including 17 ranked wins, and have been consistently ranked in the range of Nos. 2-4 this season. Harper and Spizzirri finished as National Runners-Up in the 2023 NCAA Doubles Championship.
As impressive as Spizzirri has been on the court, he’s been equally impressive off of it. A three-time ITA Scolar-Athlete and two-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team selection, Spizzirri gained the required separate admittance into UT’s prestigious McCombs School of Business where he carries a 3.82 cumulative G.P.A. as a finance major. He has also been active in community service, most recently making a visit to Dell Children’s Medical Center in Austin.
