HOME OF THE ARTS EXCURSION

BY CLASSROOM TEACHER - TRACY GEE

On Friday the 24th of March, Visual Art elective students from Years 10, 11 and 12 set off to visit HOTA in Surfers Paradise to see the exhibition Pop Masters. This travelling world class exhibition features important artworks from Andy Warhol, Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. The first-hand experience of seeing artist practice and original artworks was invaluable to the elective Visual Arts course.

"HOTA Gallery's first ever international blockbuster exhibition invites you into the world of iconic artists Andy Warhol, Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, with a collection of works never before seen in Australia. In a world exclusive exhibition, Pop Masters: Art from the Mugrabi Collection, New York, pairs these three superstars alongside artists inspired by their legacy. Together they paint a unique picture of Pop Art across the past 60 years to present Australia."

Students got to experience the newly developed HOTA precinct walking through the sculpture park, as well as exploring the different exhibitions within the bright beautiful new gallery. All students were engaged in the various artworks and beautifully behaved. As always, a credit to our school.

Our dance companies have been very busy preparing for this terms FNC Dance Festival and BraveArts.

FNC Dance Festival is Tuesday 6 June at Twin Towns Services Club. You can purchase tickets through the Twin Towns website. The Senior Company are performing a piece called 'Straight and Narrow' which explores the notion of being told to stay on the straight and narrow, but you are curious of what is beyond that. The Junior Dance Company are performing 'Hunted', which looks at the hunter and their prey. The Aboriginal Dance Company are bringing everyone together to celebrate the land that we live on with their piece 'Our Land'.

BraveArts is Thursday 22nd June in the Banora Point High School Hall. This is a showcase of Dance, Drama Music and Visual Arts. This years theme is 'All Aboard'. Come aboard the BraveArts cruise ship and be entertained as we sail the seven seas.

BANORA VISITS THE NORTHERN RIVERS SYMPHONY ORCESTRA

BY CLASSROOM TEACHER - mR RUSS TIMBS

On Sunday 30th of April, students and staff attended the ‘Jupiter Rising’ concert at the Tweed Civic Centre to watch our own amazing Northern Rivers Symphony Orchestra. We are lucky to continue our long relationship with this Orchestra. We would like to extend our congratulations to Mr Marco Bellasi who was the conductor of this concert, and who has been successful in becoming the Principal Conductor of this orchestra. We remember Marco fondly from when he did a block of Prac in our music department and sang an amazing aria at a Friday Vibes.

We were also so excited to watch Ms Alison Fletcher play her violin as the First Violinist and Concertmaster. Alison is our string tutor and long-time supporter of our Banora Point High School Community Band. In attendance was Rosie Hanna, Nathan Kalend, Phoenix Blanc, Emily Berger and Hannah Jardine as well as our own conductor Ms Felicity Moran and myself.

The Concert Program included:

  • Michael Haydn: Sinfonia in C (Perger 19), Final Movement
  • W. A. Mozart: Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola K364 featuring soloists Daniel Kowalik (violin) and Thomas Chawner (viola)
  • W. A. Mozart: Un Bacio Di Mano K541
  • W. A. Mozart: Symphony No. 41 (Jupiter)

The Mozart Sinfonia Concertante featuring the solo Violin and Viola players was an impressive and entertaining display of high-level skill and was very much enjoyed by all of us.

Mozart’s Jupiter symphony is one of the last symphonies he wrote and considered by many to be one of the best.

“WE FOSTER AN INCLUSIVE LEARNING COMMUNITY, INSPIRING STUDENTS TO ACHIEVE THEIR PERSONAL BEST BY BECOMING LIFELONG LEARNERS, CRITICAL THINKERS AND HEALTHY CREATIVE MEMBERS OF A GLOBAL SOCIETY.”

IT'S ALREADY WEEK 4!

I want to thank our wonderful P&C for purchasing a table tennis table for our support classes. Our students are very excited to start using this. A very big thank you to our P&C members who work tirelessly to support our school.

I would also like to congratulate Sheridan Hargraves as she was appointed at the end of last term to the position of Head Teacher CAPA/Wellbeing.

As you may be aware, our classrooms have recently undergone a transformation. All of our learning spaces now have a new Main Learning Display (MLD) which consists of a large 75 to 86 inch interactive panel, a mini computer, a webcam and a wireless keyboard and mouse. With the addition of powerful speakers, teachers can present a wide variety of learning materials, use digital inking tools and annotate directly on the screen, connect to cloud-based applications and empower students to interact with their learning in new ways.

In addition to these new teaching tools, under the Rural Access Gap program we also have a new role in the school for 2023 the Digital Classroom Officer role. This role is to provide support and lead professional learning for staff in their uptake of the new tools. I would like to thank Andrew Smith and Samantha Check for sharing this important role in 2023. I am passionate about technology and learning and am looking forward to our journey to make our classrooms more engaging.

I was pleased to learn that our school works closely with Elevate Education as I have worked closely with this group of highly dedicated educators for many years. Our senior students will gain a real insight from recent high achievers who have recently graduated. Their perspective often leads to a high level of motivation for our students and the presenters have many practical and research based strategies for our senior students.

CANTEEN MENU PRICE RISE

Unfortunately, with the never ending cost of living rising, our canteen has had to increase some of their prices due to their increased costs. This has been kept to a minimum and only increased where necessary. An updated copy of the menu can be found on both our website and our facebook page or by clicking on the link below. We periodically post specials throughout the term and these too, are advertised on our facebook page on a weekly basis. The following are the daily specials:

  • Monday - Special dishes from $5.50. Check the whiteboard for Jess's latest creations. Dishes range from pasta, curries, Asian delights, soups and stews.
  • Tuesday - Toasted Turkish breads from $5.50. Check the whiteboard for flavoursome combinations
  • Wednesday - Hot Dogs from $4.00.
  • Thursday - Roast Beef and Gravy Roll: $5.50.
  • Friday - Mexican Madness Nachos: $5.00 or the Beef Mexi Feast: $7.50. Beef and bean enchalada served with corn chips topped with fresh salsa, avocado and sour cream (mild or spicy).

BREAKFAST CLUB

Let's start the day on the right foot, energised and ready to learn! BPHS hosts a breakfast program each morning from 8.00am to 8.30am. This is available in THE LEARNING HUB. Students can avail themselves of various breakfast items and all students are welcome to attend. On occasion, some students may forget to bring their lunch. Should this happen, students can see their relevant Deputy Principal or Ms. Hargreaves who will organise for a cheese toastie at the school canteen.

CENTAUR DAY

Today, our school leadership team consisting of Betty Ward, Elli Steel and Jorja Goodwin accompanied our Principal Mr. Guy Wright in attending Centaur Day held at Centaur Primary School laying a wreath on behalf of the school.

The Centaur, 2/3rd Australian Hospital Ship, was a motor passenger ship converted in early 1943 for use as a hospital ship. On 12 May 1943 the Centaur sailed unescorted from Sydney at 0945 hours carrying her crew and normal staff, as well as stores and equipment of the 2/12th Field Ambulance but no patients. It was sunk without warning by a torpedo from a Japanese submarine on 14 May 1943 at approximately 0400 hours, its position being approximately 27°17' S, 153°58' E about 50 miles east north-east of Brisbane, just off Point Danger.

THIS WILL BE FUNNY SOMEDAY

Sixteen-year-old Izzy is used to keeping her thoughts to herself at school, where her boyfriend does the talking for her, and at home, where it’s impossible to compete with her older siblings and high-powered parents.

When she mistakenly walks into a stand-up comedy club and performs, the experience is surprisingly cathartic. After the show, she meets Mo, an aspiring comic who’s everything Izzy’s not: bold, confident, and comfortable in her skin. Mo invites Izzy to join her friends and introduces her to the Chicago open mic scene.

The only problem is that her new friends are college students, and Izzy tells them she’s one, too. Now Izzy, the dutiful daughter and model student, is sneaking out to perform stand-up with her comedy friends. Her controlling boyfriend is suspicious, and her former best friend knows something is going on.

But Izzy loves comedy and this newfound freedom. So, as her two parallel lives collide in hilarious ways, Izzy must choose to hide what she wants and who she really is. Or, she must finally, truly stand up for herself.

THE LORIKEET TREE

Emily loves the bush and the native animals on her family's reforested property, particularly the beautiful rainbow lorikeets that nest in one of the tallest trees. But then her father is diagnosed with a terminal illness, and Emily's world enters a tailspin.

Her twin brother, Alex, refuses to accept the truth. His coping mechanism is to build elaborate additions to his treehouse in the superstitious belief that it will avert disaster - leaving Emily to deal with harsh reality on her own.

When Alex secretly adopts a feral kitten, going against everything important to Emily, the siblings' emotions reach boiling point - with potentially dangerous consequences for them all.

WITH THE FIRE ON HIGH

Ever since she got pregnant during freshman year, Emoni Santiago’s life has been about making the tough decisions and doing what has to be done for her daughter and her abuela. The one place she can let all that go is in the kitchen. There, she lets her hands tell her what to cook, listening to her intuition and adding something magical every time, turning her food into straight-up goodness.

Even though she’s always dreamed of working in a kitchen after graduation, Emoni knows it’s not worth her time to pursue the impossible. But then, an opportunity presents itself to not only enrol in a culinary arts class in her high school but also to travel abroad to Spain for an immersion program. Emoni knows that her decisions post high school have to be practical, but despite the rules she’s made for her life — and everyone else’s rules that she refuses to play by — once Emoni starts cooking, her only choice is to let her talent break free.

SCHOOL VACCINATION PROGRAM

Keeping your child up to date with routine vaccinations helps to protect them from serious preventable diseases such as meningococcal, whooping cough, tetanus, and cancers that are caused by HPV (human papillomavirus).

As part of the NSW School vaccination program, students in Year 7 are offered free vaccines for diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (dTpa) and human papillomavirus (HPV). In Year 10, students are offered the meningococcal ACWY vaccine.

Parental consent is required for your child to receive routine vaccinations at school. If your child is in Year 7 or Year 10 this year, you can now provide this consent through the online consent portal by clicking login with a ‘Service NSW Account’.

Read a step-by-step guide on how to provide consent online. Translated guides are available in Arabic, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Vietnamese.

From February 2023, children in year 7 will now only need one dose of HPV vaccination. This change has been endorsed by ATAGI based on evidence showing that one dose provides the same level of protection against HPV as two doses.

If you have already consented to your child receiving two doses of HPV vaccine, they will only receive one dose.

If your child previously missed their second dose of HPV vaccine, they are now considered fully vaccinated and do not require a second dose.

A small number of students who are immunocompromised are still recommended to receive a three-dose course of HPV vaccine. If your child is immunocompromised, please discuss their immunisation needs with their GP.

If your child misses a school vaccination clinic, you can speak to your local GP or pharmacist about catching up on vaccination.

STUDENT ABSENCE SMS NOTIFICATIONS

Thank you to all the parents and carers who have replied to our SMS messages around your child’s absentees. Informing the school of your child’s absence is an important role in targeting our attendance concerns and a valuable tool to ensure the school is providing the support required. The reminder Monday SMS’s has proven to be a success with a further 70% of student absences, now being explained and entered into the school's system. Once again, thank you for informing and communicating with the school.

Daily SMS’s and Monday reminders WILL CONTINUE TO BE SENT OUT TO PARENTS/CARERS to help address our school's unexplained absences.
  • Parents receive a daily SMS of their child/s absence.
  • Parents are encouraged to reply to this SMS with an explanation e.g. sick, holiday etc.
  • If BPHS doesn’t receive a response to the 1st SMS, a friendly reminder SMS will be sent out the following Monday for an opportunity to respond.

BPHS have noticed a high number of student absences being unexplained, therefore we are now giving parents/carers the opportunity to reply daily and with a follow up reminder to help us all tackle the number of unexplained absences.

SCHOOL STUDENT TRAVEL INFORMATION FOR PARENTS AND STUDENTS

SCHOOL TRAVEL PASSES

Students who require a School Opal card or travel pass but have not yet applied need to apply or update their details as soon as possible.

In the Opal network, students should travel with a Child/Youth Opal card until they receive their valid School Opal card. If outside Greater Sydney, parents should contact their local bus operator to discuss their travel needs.

New Student Opal cards (including new Term Bus Passes) will be sent to the student’s nominated postal address within two weeks of their application being approved. Students living in rural and regional areas will receive their travel pass from their nominated transport operator. It may be issued via their school or be sent directly to them at home. Note: some rural and regional operators do not issue travel passes. Students/parents should confirm with their nominated operator if they do not receive a pass.

TERMS OF USE

Students using Opal cards must tap on and tap off in line with the Opal terms of use.

All students are required to comply with the Student code of conduct. The code of conduct aims to ensure the safety and well-being of school children and other passengers. It is important that parents ensure their child is aware of this, as failure to comply with the code of conduct can result in a suspension from travel.

SCHOOL TOUR AND INFORMATION EVENING

FOR PARENTS/CARERS AND STUDENTs CURRENTLY ENROLLED IN YEAR 5 OR 6 IN 2023

If you are the parent/carer of a Year 6 student, you will find this a great opportunity to explore what we have to offer. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Banora Point High School on 07 5513 1960 and ask for our Year 7 to 9 Deputy Principal, Ms Hatton.

P&C LEVY

Like most public entities, our P&C has overheads such as insurance and state body levies which can inhibit the ability to perform all the great things they do. You will see below, a P&C Levy information sheet around what has been proposed and the reasons why this is necessary. While I appreciate it is difficult to be available for the fundraising events our active P&C team completes, I encourage you to read the information below and help as you can. Ultimately, the stronger our P&C the more they can assist our students.

Please do not hesitate to contact the P&C executive with any queries about the voluntary levy: banorapointhighschool@pandcaffiliate.org.au

THE FACTS ABOUT VAPING

Please visit the NSW Health Department website for all the facts about vaping.

Vapes are not water. The main ingredient in vapes is propylene glycol, vegetable glycerine or glyercol. Vapes can contain the same harmful chemicals found in cleaning products, nail polish remover, weed killer and bug spray. They just don't put it on the pack. Vapes come in a number of flavours such as blueberry or bubble-gum that make them appealing. Many vapes also contain nicotine, the same highly addictive substance found in tobacco cigarettes. Testing has shown that vapes labelled 'nicotine-free' can have high nicotine levels. People can think they are using nicotine-free vapes and can unknowingly quickly develop a nicotine addiction.
