Girls' Varsity Gymnastics Crush New Canaan in Recent Meet By Samantha Sandrew '25

The girls’ varsity gymnastics team is victorious with Victoria Fidalgo Schioppa ’24 and Sofia Alacron Frias ’25 placing first and second against New Canaan on Feb 3. The nine competing Norwalk and Staples girls scored an overall 128.5 points out of a potential 240, beating the six opponents who scored a total of 88.3 points. Staples scored 33.6 out of 60 to New Canaan’s 31 on vault. They won again with 31.8 to 21.5 on bars. On beam, Staples swept with 31.4 to 11.6. They finished with 31.85 to 24.55 on floor, winning all four events.

Fidalgo Schioppa suspends in the air, winning her a nine out of 10 in the bar event.

Daisy Seaborne powers through the bars event, scoring 7.9 and placing second.

Captain Mimi Schindler ’22 (left) leaps to a 7.1 on bars; the event that the team did best in. “We compete with a lot of high energy, great spirit. We always pump each other up,” Schindler said.

Captain Grace Horan '22 (left) flies to a 6.2 and Fidalgo Schioppa (right) earns a 7.4 in beam. The team struggled with sticking their landings in this event. Assistant Coach Meghan Lally notes this as an area in which the girls need to improve. “What we need to work on is staying on the beam," Lally said. "Just being strong and making sure we stick everything and landing and that kind of stuff.”
Mia Guster ’23 (left) spins her way to a 7.9 on the floor event. Daisy Seaborn '25 (right) elevates the bar with her floor performance earning her a 7.9 as well.

The girls are now waiting to receive information on who qualified for FCIACS, States and States Open. FCIACS take place on Feb 12., States on Feb 26 and States Open on March 5. In the meantime, Lally reports the girls have been training hard.

“We are waiting to get all of our team scores in,” Lally said. “To see the average, to see if we qualify and what position we would qualify in.”
