Class 3 Our Learning

What a busy half term we have had filled with World Book Day festivities, Mothers Day card making and finally Easter activities.

Thank you to those of you who have been attending our Rise and Shine Share a Book sessions first thing on a Thursday morning. This will continue in the summer term.

Literacy

This half term we have continued to focus on our handwriting and sentence writing with capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. We are getting really good at remembering these in our writing,

Our first unit of writing was based on the Candy House in Hansel and Gretel. We loved identifying the yummy nouns in the picture of the house and then thinking of different adjectives to describe these.

We then read The Magic Paintbrush by Julia Donaldson and used this to write a letter. We dream a story map to help us remember and retell the story.

We looked at the features of a letter as we have not wrote one before. We identified that letters use Dear and Yours sincerely and we used these in our final piece to make it look realistic. We wrote questions in our letter and correctly punctuated them with question marks.

Maths

We have focused on measurement this half term. We have measured lengths, weights and capacity. We have used non-standard units to measure. We measured in cubes when measuring length and height of an object.

We used blocks when measuring the weight of different objects.

We used small cups when measuring the capacity of different objects.

Some of us challenged ourselves by estimating first. We know that the word estimate means to have a guess. We compared the measurements using key vocabulary.

Art

Our topic this half term had an art focus. We looked at portraits created by the two artists Picasso and Hockney. We discussed their similarities and differences and talked about the colours they used. We created a colour wheel using water paints. We can identify primary and secondary colours and we know how to mix primary colours to make a secondary colour. We know how to make a colour lighter and darker using white or black paint.

We learnt how to create different effects using water colours.

After exploring different painting techniques we created a landscape in the style of Picasso and Hockney. Finally we created a portrait in the style of Picasso and we used watercolours to make it bright and colourful just like Picasso’sartwork.

Science

¡We have learnt about different animal habitats in science lessons this half term. We know that different animals live in different places and we can explain why they are suited to that place. We explored the school grounds looking for different habitats.

RSE

We have continued with our learning on positive relationships which we have explored through looking at families and friends.

RE

Our key question in RE this half term has been, ‘what can be learnt from the lives of people of significant faiths?’ We have looked at this question in Christianity and Judaism. We know that Father Tim is significant to Christians in Mapplewell and that Moses is significant to Jewish people.

PE

This half term we learnt a new sport. We have really enjoyed learning new skills through hockey.

we enjoyed taking part in the athletic event with Sean Gaffney and we helped to raise lots of money.

Computing

In Computing this half term we have created music using music lab. We listened to music and drew pictures to represent the sounds.
