compare the digestive systems Cathy Cao

DOG

I chose dog to compare with human because dogs are really common in our lives. They live with humans and their digestive might have more similarities to humans. The digestive system starts from the mouth. Dogs have large and sharp teeth that they can bite meat and bones. They chew large pieces and eat quickly but humans are more like to eat slowly so we can digest the food easily. When the food pass to the stomach, the stomach would produces lots of hydrochloric acid and this would help to break down the meat and bones the dog ate. Then the food would pass to small intestine in the form of liquid. The whole digestive system would take 8 - 9 hours long which is more quicker than humans.

Snake

I chose snake to compare with humans because it has large differences of outside looking from humans and I'm curious does its digestive system would be more different from humans too. Snake has a long esophagus that covers half of the body. The peristaltic movement would help the food pass through the esophagus to stomach. For humans, the food is more easier to pass through the esophagus because it's short and it's straight down to the stomach. Because of snake is cold-blooded animal, the rate of digestion would depends on its body temperature.

Starfish

The mouth of a starfish is on the underside of its body. It's really interesting that starfish has two stomachs which humans only have one. Food enters the mouth and get straight into the first stomach, then pass to the second stomach. After that, the food would pass to the arms of the starfish which have many digestive glands there. When the digestive glands get the nutrients they need, the waste would go through a small intestine to the port which is in the central of the upside of its body and excreted from the body.
