September 26, 2022

Volume 10 Edition 09

Midland Public Schools District Vision Statement: Lead with respect, trust and courage. Ensure an equitable, collaborative and inclusive culture. Enable all to achieve success.
Congratulations to our National Merit Commended Students at Dow High. L to R: Amy Lee, Grant Wang, Maia Figueroa, Robert Roe, Sydney Thompson, Charlotte Ault, Sean Hansen Not pictured: Audrey Fanning National Merit Semi-Finalists and Commended students are determined based on their PSAT/NMSQT score, a test taken during the junior year. Of the 1.5 million students across the nation who take the PSAT/NMSQT, those who score in the top 1% are named National Merit Semi-Finalists. Those who score in the top 2-3% are named National Merit Commended students. This is a tremendous accomplishment for both the semi-finalists and commended students.
Dow High’s lead-up to Homecoming involved staff and students by hosting a spirit week. Each day had a different theme: 80’s day, student-teacher swap, and of course, green and yellow days were all celebrated throughout the week.

Becca's Closet is a national, non-profit organization that donates formal dresses to high school girls who cannot afford to purchase them. At Midland High, Mrs. Rankin helps curate the local chapter (currently housed in room 119), and is one of only three chapters in the State of Michigan. As a young high school student, Rebecca launched a drive to provide prom dresses to girls who could not afford them. She single-handedly collected more than 250 formal dress donations - helping girls attend their high school proms. From this, Becca's Closet was born.

Midland County Emergency Food Pantry Network

In cooperation with the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan (FBEM), the Midland County Emergency Food Pantry Network (EFPN) is offering the Backpack Buddies Program to help provide nutritious food for elementary and preschool children throughout Midland County. How it works - food packages are distributed to enrolled children on Friday afternoons to provide food for the weekend. Children are eligible for this program if they meet at least one of the following criteria: qualify for the free or reduced school lunch program, living in a household with a Food Stamp FIP case number, or living in a household qualifying for WIC assistance. Participation in the program is at no cost to a family or the school. If you would like to enroll a child in the program, please complete the enrollment form and return it to your school’s office.

The first food delivery is on October 11th, distributed to students on Friday, October 14th.
Dr. Tom Chamberlin brought in dry ice for students at Jefferson to experiment with last Tuesday. The after-school, student-led STEM Club meets in Mrs. Brillhart’s room every Monday. The group focuses on hands-on science projects requested by the students.
