This webinar has been adopted from a presentation create by Sarah Landis, Kelly Hilton, and Lisa Highfill which they pesented at Camp Adobe in 2019.

Objectives

  • Understand why and how we can create authentic alternative assessments
  • Learn how to effectively utilize technology tools to get to know learners
  • Transform how to look at the data in order to inform instruction

We will look specifically at the following technology tools:

  • Hyperdocs
  • Using rubrics in Microsoft Teams
  • Sway
  • PowerPoint presenter coach

ISTE Standards:

  • 2.5 Designer: Educators design authentic, learner-driven activities and environments that recognize and accommodate learner variability.
  • 2.6 Facilitator: Educators facilitate learning with technology to support student achievement of the ISTE Standards for Students.
  • 2.7 Analyst: Educators understand and use data to drive their instruction and support students in achieving their learning goals.

What is our ultimate goal with assessment?

Are we getting what we are wanting to measure?

Let's look at assessment from a student perspective.

Self efficacy in education

Self-efficacy is a personal belief in one's capability to organize and execute courses of action required to attain designated types of performances. [A. Bandura, 1987]
  • How does a student's self efficacy affect their ability to show what they know?
  • Are our assessments really capturing what we want to know? Are students really showing their ability?
  • What message do our assessments send students about the way mastery for a opic works?

Let's look at this students self efficacy for writing. How do you think it affects her?

What if the teacher responded to her writing with "Wow, you are a poetic writer Ofelia! What do you think?"

Is your assessment giving you the whole story?

Can our assessments actually do more than just tell us what students don't know? How and what can we ask of our students to build their efficacy for learning?

Let's take a look at a creative, authentic, and alternative assignment

How might you assess the following video? What does this piece tell you about the student?

100% of us learn differently.

Todd Rose, End of Average

Do our assessments reflect variability?

Invite students to show even more of what they learned throughout a unit using creativity tools.

Allow opportunities to show their learning visually, creatively, and with open ended questions.

An assessment is truly transformational when students think critically about the topic, make meaning, synthesize, and design something that teaches others.

A creative and authentic alternative assessment does not limit students. It invites students to show ALL that they know.

Steps for creating a creative and authentic alternative assignment:

Helpful technology tools

Teams Rubrics are great ways for students to understand the expectations of an assignment an an easy way for teachers to give feedback to students and provide them with a grade.

Did you know Sway has templates students can choose from to create projects?

  • Picture stories
  • Beginning, middle and end of writing
  • PBL Projects
  • Timelines

Encourage students to practice presentations with PowerPoint Presenter Coach!

Let's connect! What are some ways you can utilize creative, authentic, alternative assignments?
