Weekly Rewind No. 20-ranked Purdue opened the season with two dominating victories

Purdue opened the 2017-18 season with a pair of dominating victories over SIU-Edwardsville (105-74) and Chicago State (111-42). The Boilermakers are now 2-0 for the 10th time in Matt Painter's 13 years at Purdue

Purdue's players wanted to make a statement. They got together as a team and came up with 14 words to make that statement.

Purdue also celebrated its 2017 Big Ten Championship on Friday night in a pregame ceremony when it unveiled its 23rd Big Ten banner. Purdue is the all-time leader in Big Ten Championships (23).

On the court, Purdue shot 59.0 percent from the field and had 24 assists against 11 turnovers in a 105-74 win over SIU-Edwardsville on Friday.

Purdue's 59.0 field goal percentage was its highest in a season opener since shooting 77.0 percent against LIU Brooklyn to begin the 1997-98 season

Purdue's 105 points were the seventh-most nationally on college basketball's opening night.

Dakota Mathias scored 18 points in both games, adding nine assists against zero turnovers and seven rebounds.

Mathias is now 6-of-7 from long range and 11-of-16 from the field to start the season, averaging 18.0 PPG, 4.5 APG and 3.5 RPG. He has zero turnovers in 46 minutes played.

Mathias now has 160 career 3-pointers and since the start of last year, is shooting 78-of-166 (.470) from long distance.

Carsen Edwards had a sensational opening week, averaging 20.5 points and 2.5 assists per game. He shot 15-of-24 (.625) from the field and 6-of-11 (.545) from long distance. More importantly, he has zero turnovers in 42 minutes so far this year.

The law firm of Edwards and Edwards has scored 70 points with 24 rebounds and 10 assists in the season's first two games.

Nojel Eastern had eight points with eight assists and five rebounds in the season opener against SIU-Edwardsville.

Eastern's eight assists against SIU-Edwardsville were the most for a freshman in a season opener since the 1972-73 season.

Vincent Edwards averaged 14.5 points, 8.5 points, 2.5 assists and 2.5 blocks per game in the two victories.

He recorded his fifth career double-double in the win over Chicago State.

Edwards moved past Stephen Scheffler into 35th on the school's career scoring list with 1,156 points.

He now needs just 344 points, 163 rebs and 93 assists to become Purdue's first career 1,500-700-400 player.

P.J. Thompson scored 16 points on 4-of-7 3-point shooting in the win over Chicago State. Since the start of last year, Thompson is 59-of-144 (.410) from 3-point range. Thompson is averaging 11.0 points per game.

Matt Haarms saw his first career action after a redshirt year. The 7-foot, 3-inch Dutchman went 7-of-10 from the field and scored 20 points with 12 rebounds and six blocked shots in 37 minutes during the two games. Haarms plays the game with some passion and energy.

Isaac Haas went 7-of-9 from the field during the week, averaging 12.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game.

Grady Eifert saw his first significant career action, averaging 8.5 points and 3.5 rebounds while shooting 8-of-10 from the field in 14.5 minutes per game.

The weekend was capped off when Tommy Luce made his first career field goal late in the win over Chicago State, setting off the weekend's loudest ovation.

Purdue's 111 points vs. Chicago State were its most since scoring 118 against Florida A&M on Dec. 22, 1997.

Purdue is averaging 108.0 points per game in its first two games, shooting 59.8 percent from the field and 44.7 percent from 3-point range. Purdue's average margin of victory during the first two games is 50.0 points per game.

The 69-point margin of victory over Chicago State was the second largest in school history (106 points vs. Indiana State on Jan. 10, 1911) and largest margin in the modern era.

Purdue has shot at least 59.0 percent in back-to-back games for the first time since Dec. 1994.
