His most famous observations were in his study of thin slices of cork, describing the pores, or "cells" he viewed. Hooke had discovered plant cells, or more precisely, Hooke had been viewing the cell walls in cork tissue.

His brother committed suicide at the age of 48
On 27 March 1678, Robert’s brother John committed suicide by hanging himself. The reason for his action is not certain. He was 48 years old at the time of his death.

Anton van Leeuwenhoek was the first scientist to closely observe cells under a microscope; he paved the way for a modern understanding of biology overall. He actually gave cells their name after the resemblance he believed they had to a monk's quarters. Anton van Leeuwenhoek is considered to be the father of microbiology.
