Plant Cell to Theater Analogy Created by: Abby Dell'Erba
The cell wall is the protective, semi-permeable outer layer of a plant cell. A major function of the cell wall is to give the cell strength and structure, and to filter molecules that pass in and out of the cell.
The curtain is like the cell wall. It's the thing that "protects" the actors from the audience until they are ready for the show. This is also the thing that times when the actors can be seen by the audience.
A cell membrane is like a cell's gatekeeper. It's the outer layer that surrounds a cell, letting substances in — or keeping them out.
There are different curtains on the stage. There is the front curtain, and then there are curtains in the back. The curtains in the back are like the cell membrane. These block part of the stage that is not being use or to add effect to the show/play.
The vacuole is like a storage bubble. It stores food, or any variety of nutrients a cell might need to survive.
The vacuole is like props. Without the props, the story wouldn't be able to be shown, or showed so the audience knows where the story is taking place. Without the visual effect during the play, it wouldn't be very entertaining.
Ribosomes is a cell structure that makes protein. Protien is need for many cells functions, such as repairing damage, or directing chemical processes. Ribosomes can be found floating within the cytoplasm, or stuck to the endoplasmic.
Ribosomes is like theater energy. This is something that we do right before a show to give eachother energy. It's also the time we spend to tell eachother how much everyone means to everyone. It's basically what helps us start, and get the right kind of energy for the show. {there's also a lot of crying..}
The mitochondria produces the energy currency of the cell, through respiration, and to regulate cellular metabolism. The central set of reactions involved in ATP production are collectively known as the citric acid cycle.
The mitochondria is called the powerhouse of the cell. This is like the director of the play. The director is there to over see everything, and run the play. Every idea for the play has to go by the director before the final decision is made. The director is there for the preparation of the play.
The nucleus steers the cells hereditary material, or DNA, and it coordinates the cells activities, which include intermediary metabolism, growth, protein synthesis, and reproduction.
The stage manager is like the nucleus. The stage managers job is to also oversee everything, tell everyone what to do, and know the play like the back of their own hand. They make decisions, and they are what holds the play together. During the show, they sit in the right hand corner of the stage, and direct the lights.
The Golgi body is a flattened, layered, sac like organelles that looks like a stack of pancakes. It is located near the nucleus. It packages proteins and carbohydrates into membrane-bound vesicles for "export" from the cell.
I think of the tech crew like Golgi bodies. They are close to the nucleus (stage manger.) They are in charge, of lights, props, makeup, costumes, and basically everything else besides from acting on stage. People tend to overlook the tech crew, but honestly, the show would be in pieces without them.
Chloroplasts are the organelles found in plant cells and eukaryotes algae that conduct photosynthesis. It absorbs sunlight and uses it in the conjunction with water and carbon dioxide gas, to provide food for the plants.
The players main energy is found from the audience. The whole purpose of a play is to perform it, in front of an audience. For the plant, it's food. For theater, it's adrenaline. And we get it from the energy of the audience, which comes back to us.
The endoplasmic Reticulum is the manufacturing and packaging system. It works closely with the Golgi apparatus and ribosomes.
This is where the tech crew and stage manager works, and runs. It's where the props are stored, and where the players wait for they'd questions on stage. It's where everything is prepared for the front of the stage.
The cytoplasm is the jelly-like fluid that fills a cell. It is made up of mostly water and salt. It is present within the cell membrane of all cell types and contains all organelles and cell parts.
The cast and crew are what makes the show. Without them, there wouldn't be a show, or a play. That create the tech crew, and the stage manger, and the actors, and every student that makes the props, costumes, and does makeup and everything else,
