Class 3 Our Learning

Wow, what an amazing term we have had full of new learning and kindness.

Literacy

We arrived to school to find some strange clothes in our classroom! Who could they belong to? They were way too big for Mrs Allen and they were clothes that a man would wear. We read The Smartest Giant in Town and wrote two character descriptions to describe George when he is scruffy and when he is smart.

We made and ate our own sandwich to help us write a set of instructions. In this literacy unit we explored time openers and imperative verbs.

We finally looked at information texts for the first time. We distinguished between fact and fiction and learnt how to use subheadings to separate our writing. We wrote our own information text on food using the subheadings ‘healthy food’ and ‘unhealthy food’.

Maths

We have looked at multiplication and division again this half term and we impressed Mrs Allen with our knowledge on arrays from last term.

We then moved on to doubling and halving of a number.

Finally we explored fractions of a shape and an amount. We found both half and a quarter of a shape before moving on to find half and a quarter of a number. We know the parts need to be the same to make it fair and equal.

DT

Our topic this half term had a DT focus. We planned, made and threw a kindness tea party which developed our DT skills in textiles, resistant materials and food. We designed and evaluated our work along the way. We made our own bunting to decorate the tea party.

We then made our own cupcake stand using strong cardboard. We explored different methods of joining first to ensure our product would be fit for purpose.

We learnt all about how to prepare food safely and hygienically before making sandwiches for the tea party. We tasted different foods as well as our own sandwich and commented on its properties.

Science

We have developed own scientific knowledge this half term through our topic focusing on Materials. We explored school looking for different materials. We can identify the object and the material it is made out of. We carried out experiments to test different materials and compare materials.

PE

We have moved our bodies and grooved in PE this half term.

RE

In RE our focus question was ‘why are some times special?’ We have looked at the different celebrations that our special in different religions.

RSE & PHSE

We have focused on safety this half term. We have identified the people who keep us safe such as policemen, doctors and nurses and teachers. We have discussed what to do in an emergency and who we could ask for help. We identified the dangers in our homes and talked about how to remain safe around these things such as fires and microwaves.

Music

We enjoyed music week this half term. We learnt about pitch, rhythm patterns, graphic notation and how to represent and create the sound.

Spring 2

I am excited for our learning in the next half term and watching you grow alongside our class sunflower.

Our topic focus is Geography. We will be learning about the UK, the continents and oceans and then we will be moving onto Africa and comparing a place in Africa with Barnsley.

In Literacy we will be writing a traditional tale with a difference. We will write another information text linked to our science topic. We will also write a personal recount following our trip (I wonder where we will be going?)

In maths we will explore telling the time to the hour. We will then identify coins and notes and learn the value of these. We will then move onto looking at measurement.

In Science our focus is Animals. We will look at the different classification of animals and name and label their body parts.

In PSHE our focus will be citizenship. We will discuss rules, what they mean and why they are needed.

In RE our focus question is ‘what can be learned from the lives of significant people of faith?’

In PE we will get our bodies moving through gymnastics.
