February was National Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month! We will continue to feature the CTE programs that Midland Public Schools offers that prepare students for various high-demand, high-wage careers!

This week, we highlight the Automotive Technology Program

MPS courses offered in Automotive Technology:

  • Car Care
  • Automotive Technology I
  • Automotive Technology II

Featured Students:

Daniel Charters, Megan Smith, and Gavin Painter, Seniors; DHS

When asked how the Automotive Technology program has made an impact on their education, Daniel, Megan, and Gavin responded:

“This program has formed my work ethic in a matter of two years. And the learning we do in here goes beyond the trades or beyond just automotive, but in life lessons too. So, I think it's very valuable whether you’re into cars or not. I like the freedom we have to go above with miscellaneous work… right now, we’re building a flatbed, so it doesn’t have to just be the labs that we get assigned here - but the freedom once we get everything done.”- Daniel Charters

“It has helped a lot with progressing my knowledge in the field that I want to go into. I want to be an automotive technician. So I work in the mornings, and then I come here [to Dow High] for 5th and 6th hours for auto tech, then I leave and go back to work. I shadow a tech at Garber, so anything he does, I do too.” - Megan Smith

“I just feel like it's a really great place to learn. There are a lot of learning opportunities, there are a bunch of cars that we get to work on every day, and all the labs are really well-made. And I just feel like it's a really great program. I want to be a mechanic one day and I feel like this is an amazing start.” - Gavin Painter

Thanks, Daniel, Megan, and Gavin, keep up the great work!

ALPS Genius Hour!

Genius Hour

On February 21st, Central Park Elementary ALPS students presented Genius Hour projects! The purpose of Genius Hour is to give students independence and teach them to be self-directed learners while researching a topic or passion that genuinely interests and motivates them.

The Central Park ALPS Genius Hour experience gave students the opportunity to work once a week, building their knowledge on a topic, individually or in small groups. Students applied higher-order thinking skills and creative and critical thinking skills to create a project to share with peers, families, and community members. This process included the application of problem-solving strategies, perseverance, and collaboration. ALPS students and teachers are looking forward to more Genius Hour opportunities in the future!

At the end of February, thirty members of Dow High Student Leadership 1 & 2 traveled to Grand Rapids to attend the MASC/MAHS State Student Leadership Conference. The Leadership Executive Board, made up of Caleb Kaiser (12), Wil Kuper (12), Taylor Neuman (12), Emilee Bonter (11), Allison Sheets (11), and Lauren VanSumeren (11), shared their Student Showcase about a variety of service projects the class has conducted with students from all of the state. Dow High students were able to hear a variety of presentations about the great things that student leaders from throughout Michigan are doing in the hopes to bring new ideas back to the program. In addition to presentations, Dow student leaders were also recognized in several of the award categories that are presented at the conference. Caleb Kaiser received the Unsung Hero Award, Taylor Neuman was recognized as a nominee for the Student Leader of the Year Award, and the team of Emilee Bonter, Zailey Archbold (10), Christina Burnside (11), and Hope Ridley (12) received an award recognizing their blankets for foster teens project as an Exceptional Service Project.
