Fallacy of Structure

The “Fallacy of Structure Series” is informed by Jeremy Bentham’s theory of the panopticon and the history of the gaze-controlling architecture of prisons intended for penitence rather than reform. The works implement a dual sense of restriction and expanse, challenging the identity-shaping strategies of these encompassing structures. This series is informed by Giannell’s experience as the inaugural Artist in Residence with the Alabama Prison Arts + Education Project in 2019 teaching and collaborating with incarcerated individuals inside of two men’s medium-security prisons.
