What is a digital echo chamber?
An echo chamber describes the experience of someone encountering information and opinions that only reflect their own biases and thoughts. Social media is designed for the individual's consumption, therefore, feeds are tailored and programmed specifically to show you your preferences. This can cause misinformation and a radicalization of views.
What is an incel?
According to ADL.org, incels are described as “heterosexual men who blame women and society for their lack of romantic success”. They are online misogynists whose ideologies are rooted in beliefs that women these days hold too much power over them. They are considered male rights radicals and there have been numerous reports of violent acts against minorities by people who are identified as such.
What is the correlation?
There is indeed a correlation between the digital echo chamber and the development of incels online. Online spaces such as facebook, instagram, and reddit are examples of where these like-minded people can chat about their beliefs. Inside the echo chamber, people are not hearing other points of view or differences in opinion which can indeed lead to the further radicalization of individuals.
As recently as October 11th, 2022, an Ohio man named Tres Genco has pleaded guilty to attempting a hate crime. He is a self-identified incel who was planning a mass shooting of women. It is reported that he had several profiles on a popular incel site, and posted hundreds of times during the few years he spent active on this internet website. He wrote many times about his hatred of women and the jealousy and contempt that he held for them, even praising Elliot Rodger, who in May of 2014, shot and killed six people outside of a Californian sorority house. There are many other proclaimed incels who have been linked to hate crimes and other disturbances.
But how can we combat this?
-It is essential to remain knowledgeable about what makes a source reliable and how to identify the truth versus fake news.
-We must learn to be able to step out of our comfort zones and explore other peoples thoughts and opinions.
-Check in with loved ones that you may suspect to be taken advantage of and may be falling down the internet "rabbit hole". Make sure they are able to seek/ access help if needed.
