Jingi Walla - Welcome!

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land, the Arakwal people of the Bundjalung nation. We are grateful for the winding creek - Balun - and the Bangalow Palm trees, that are not just pretty but also a source of food, water and materials for the Arakwal people. We are thankful we can learn whilst we play on this land. We respect and love our Jugan - land. We treat all elders with jarima (pronounced Garima) - respect. We will take action to protect, unite and connect with Country.

class of the week ngumahl - kr

Jingi Walla!

We are the ridiculously adventurous and perseverant class members of Ngumahl. Come and take a peek into our learning at Bangalow Public School…

Literacy

Our brains have been working hard to learn and master our phonemes. A phoneme is the sound a letter makes. Because of this, we are getting better and better at segmenting and stretching out our words, helping us to read and write! This has made such a difference to our writing! We are focusing on using amazing words to describe nouns when writing. Enjoy reading some of our work. Mrs Cross has also been doing some writing lessons in our class.

Maths

In maths we have been learning about how smaller numbers can be found inside bigger numbers. We made Rekenreks using foam, pipe cleaners and beads. A Rekenrek allows students to make mental images of numbers and discover number relationships. We then used the Rekenreks to represent numbers to 20 in different arrangements and used clues to “crack the code”.

Bits’n’Bobs!

Take a look at some of the other things we have been getting up to. Look at us go!

billy cart derby

Sunday was an extraordinary day at the Pit Stop for our school’s major P&C fundraising and community event as part of the Bangalow Billycart Derby. The glorious weather and incredible efforts and energy of our P&C, Year 6 students and parent volunteers made the day an enormous success.

Thank you to everyone who donated cakes and jar tombolas, bought or sold raffle tickets and to those who gave their time on the day. We know that the raffle ticket sales alone have raised $11,000 for the school and we cannot wait to hear the overall outcome from the event.

An event like this takes months of planning, organisation and energy and we would like to recognise the huge efforts of our 2023 P&C for all their work in making the event such a success.

The raffle is drawn tonight – good luck!

Far North Coast Dance Festival

Our four school dance groups, Years 1-6 Boys, Stage 1 Girls, Stage 2 Girls and Stage 3 girls have been working hard on finishing and polishing their dance pieces for the Far North Coast Festival. Involving, over 90 students across the school it is an exciting opportunity for these students. Last Friday, the festival coordinator visited our school for our dress rehearsal ahead of our performance at the FNC Dance Festival on the evening of Wednesday 7th June.

Mrs Sharp and Mrs Cross are both extremely proud of the effort and time the students have committed to their dance groups over Term 1 and 2.

naidoc week

In 2023, the NAIDOC Theme is “For Our Elders”. “Across every generation, our Elders have played, and continue to play, an important role and hold a prominent place in our communities and families. They are cultural knowledge holders, trailblazers, nurturers, advocates, teachers, survivors, leaders, hard workers, and our loved ones.” https://www.naidoc.org.au/awards/current-theme

The Goonellabah Department of Education Office is holding their NAIDOC Celebration on Friday 21st July 2023 (Week 1, Term 3) and would like to work in partnership with local schools to recognise the long-standing commitment that our local Elders have contributed to education.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students are being invited to submit a piece of work (of the following mediums) to either recognise an Elder that has inspired them or what the theme “For Our Elders” mean to them. The submissions could be either -

  • A piece of writing
  • A drawing
  • A poem
  • A song
  • A rap
  • A video
  • A photo collage
  • A podcast/Vodcast

When students are considering creating their piece of work, please think about the following attributes outlined in the theme description, that our Elders are:

  • trailblazers
  • nurturers
  • advocates
  • teachers
  • survivors
  • leaders
  • hard workers

The submissions will be displayed/played at the Goonellabah Education’s NAIDOC Celebrations on Friday 21st July 2023.

For our non-Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students they may wish to design a poster around the theme “For Our Elders” or colour-in the 2023 NAIDOC Poster that can be downloaded HERE , which will also be displayed around the Goonellabah Education Office.

Students are encouraged to create their work at home and submit it to the school office by Friday 16th June.

FOOD ALLERGY WEEK 21-27 MAY 2023

Food Allergy Week is an initiative of Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia (A&AA) and is dedicated to promoting community understanding of food allergy to help protect those at risk. Australia has the highest incidence of food allergy in the world, and it’s growing at a rapid rate with the country seeing a 7% year on year increase in food allergy fatalities over the last 15 years. We estimate that there are more than 500,000 Australians with a diagnosed food allergy and many more undiagnosed.

The theme for Food Allergy Week 2023 is adrenaline injector first for anaphylaxis, asthma reliever second: a life-saving order. Many people that have both food allergy and asthma sometimes confuse anaphylaxis for asthma. If you have food allergy and asthma and you experience sudden breathing difficulty within a few hours after eating, always use your adrenaline injector first and then your asthma reliever puffer. If in doubt, give adrenaline injector first.

If you have both asthma and food allergy, we encourage you to go to your GP to learn how to manage both and how to respond in an emergency. It is always good practice to have well controlled asthma and this includes in people with food allergy as breathing difficulty is common in anaphylaxis. Well controlled asthma can help reduce your risk of severe anaphylaxis. Always have your ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis and your adrenaline injector with you. Follow instructions on your ASCIA Action Plan. You can read more about asthma and anaphylaxis HERE.

pit stop wrap up

A massive thanks to everyone for your support, contributions and attendance at Sunday’s Pit Stop. What a day it was!!

The sun was shining, there was so much fun and good community vibe in the air! It was so lovely to be back on school grounds and celebrating our school with the community.

Big thanks to the extended P&C and our fundraising committee for working tirelessly behind to scenes to put on such a fantastic day. Shout out to all the helpers, stall coordinators, bakers, jar tombola-creators, those who donated, raffle ticket sellers, and set up and pack down crews (who our GA Mark mentioned were the best he’d worked with!). We are so grateful for your support!

We are still tallying the final numbers and waiting for donations from stallholders to come in. We expect to have fundraised a similar amount to last year ($14,000) which is a stellar effort especially given it was only 8 months ago and the economy has changed since then.

Raffle ticket sales are still coming in too but we are look at selling over $11,000 worth.

So a total of $25,000 which is amazing!

Special shout out to Common People Brewing Co (Kempnich family) who donated 50% of their profits from the day, Nexba (Bilbe family) for donating a pallet of drinks and Poppy Galactic and the Beat (Richmond family) and Spaghetti Circus (Cadwell family) for their performances. In the Pink Gelato, Abracadabra and Foodworks who also donated prizes and stock for us to sell.

Thank you to our amazing stall coordinators Ali, Jess, Danielle, Juliet, Alisa and Chloe for getting people excited, coordinating volunteers and presenting such beautiful stalls. Thanks to ALL the volunteers and Year 6 students and parents who worked on a stall. We are so thankful for your efforts!

Thank you to the extended school team (especially Ms Antoun, Mrs Cross, Mrs Gisen, Ms Jameson, Mark and office team) for their support and coordination behind the scenes.

Thanks to all our families for coming and supporting the day. We’ve heard it was our best Pit Stop yet!

We welcome your feedback about the day and the lead up - what worked, what didn’t, what was your highlight? Please also share your photos with us!

Send us an email

Thanks again

Anna and the P&C Exec (Chami, Mike, Nell, Emma and Leah)
