Dr. Holly Burkett

Dr. Holly Burkett, HCD Ph.D. alumna, a Marshall Goldsmith Stakeholder Centered Coach, and accomplished talent builder, was again accepted (March 2022) into the 2022 Forbes Coaches Council, an invitation-only community for leading business and career coaches.

Dr. Mary Funk

Dr. Mary Funk, Associate Teaching Professor of Human Capital Development, was awarded the Butch Oustalet Distinguished Professorship Teaching Award.

Jimmy Ballinger, recent graduate of the Logistics, Trade and Transportation, M.S. program, and Maurine Pace, current Human Capital Development, M.S. student, were recently inducted into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.

Dena Temple

Dena Temple, Administrative Assistant for the School of Leadership, was named Director-At-Large for the Mississippi Coast Audubon Society's Board of Directors.

Dr. John Hubbard

Dr. John Hubbard, HCD Ph.D. alumni, was re-elected to a second term on the Town of Fairview (TX) Town Council on May 7th, 2022.

Dr. Hubbard accepted the position of Vice President - Special Projects with The Pace Group, an executive recruiting firm, based in Fort Worth, Texas. John is also a faculty member in the school of business at the University of North Texas at Dallas.

Cory Wicker

Dr. Cory Wicker, HCD Ph.D. alumni, was awarded the 2022 Association for Talent Development Student Scholarship.

Dr. Tomeka Harbin

Dr. Tomeka Harbin, HCD Ph.D. alumna, was awarded the Delta State University Emerald Award of Excellence. This award is given as the Top Administrator Award.

Dr. Bradley Winton

Dr. Bradley Winton, Assistant Professor of Management, participated in Doctoral Consortium conferences, which provide a place for doctoral students to receive mentoring and advice as they complete their dissertations and move into the next phase of their careers.

Dr. Yuanyuan Zhang and Dr. Zikai Zhou

Dr. Yuanyuan Zhang, Assistant Professor of Industrial Engineering Technology, and Dr. Zikai Zhou's proposal "Barriers to and Motivators for Active Transportation for Mississippi Adults,” has been approved for a College of Business and Economic Development research award. The research team will provide the Associate Dean of Research with an update on the progress of the work by December 1, present at a college research showcase during either the fall or spring semester of the following academic year, and submit a manuscript on the topic to prestigious journals in the field of transportation.

PUBLICATIONS AND PRESENTATIONS

Dr. Holly Burkett

Dr. Holly Burkett, HCD Ph.D. alumna, contributed the chapter “Six Essentials for a Thriving Learning Culture” in ATDs Handbook for Training and Development, published March 2022. Edited by Elaine Biech, this third edition offers insights from such luminaries as Ken Blanchard, Jack & Patti Phillips, Jim Kouzes, Elliot Masie, and David Vance (among many others) about the growing role of talent development professionals, the changing world of work, and the critical need for business alignment.

Dr. Burkett also wrote the article “Boosting Team Resilience at the Speed of Change” for the March 2022 edition of Talent Management Magazine.

Dr. Burkett contributed to the February 22nd Forbes article “12 Smart Ways A Business Can Stand Out In A Saturated Market” as a member of the Forbes Coaches Council.

Dr. Burkett was invited to present a session, “Boosting Team Resilience: A Future-Proofing Imperative” during the Association of Talent Development (ATD) International Conference & Exposition in Orlando on May 16th, 2022. More than 13,000 L&D professionals from 80+ countries rely on ATD’s annual conference to learn about trends and best practices from world-class speakers and the largest Exposition of tools and resources in the field.

Dr. Burkett served as faculty for the May 2nd-3rd Measuring Return on Investment (MROI) Certificate, offered by ATD in collaboration with the ROI Institute.

Dr. Burkett presented a Member’s Webinar, “Boosting Resilience When Your Teams are Lean, Mean, and Out of Steam,” for the Association of Change Management Professionals (ACMP) on April 12th, 2022, where she provided prevention strategies to help change leaders combat burnout and change fatigue.

Dr. Shuyan Wang

Dr. Shuyan Wang, Professor of Instructional Technology and Design, gave two presentations at the 33rd International Conference for the Society for Information Technology and Teacher Education in San Diego, April 11-15, 2022. Both articles were published in the refereed conference proceedings: 1). Enhancing Online Teaching and Learning with Videos, and 2). Promoting Students’ Online Interaction and Collaboration.

Dr. Bradley Winton

Dr. Bradley Winton, DBA, presented “The Evolution of a Princess: Pop Culture's Pathway to Effective Leadership” at the Southwest Academy of Management’s 2022 annual conference on March 4th. The goal of the presentation was to provide a novel way to help students approach management topics in the classroom.

Service Project

The School of Leadership faculty, staff, students, and alumni collected the pictured items in addition to $520 in cash donations for the Humane Society of South Mississippi. The results of our Spring 2022 service project provided animal toys, treats, donations, and cleaning supplies for the Humane Society of South Mississippi. Thank you to all who participated!
