PDST- Primary Language Curriculum eBulletin 8 Playful and Creative Use of Language

In this, the eighth in the series of eBulletins, we have outlined some learning experiences and activities which may be used to bring Learning Outcome 10/Toradh Foghlama 10 for Oral Language/Teanga ó Bhéal from the Primary Language Curriculum (PLC) to life for children either in the classroom or virtually.

This eBulletin explores Learning Outcome 10, Playful and Creative Use of Language in Oral Language, agus Toradh Foghlama 10 Teanga a Úsáid go Spraíúil agus go Cruthaitheach maidir le Teanga ó Bhéal. “Play makes a major contribution to literacy in the opportunities it provides for the development of the children’s oral language, which is an important contributor to developing overall literacy” (PLC, 2019, p. 46). Explicit teaching of the aesthetic and creative aspects of language helps all children in our classrooms to appreciate and use language playfully in their own conversations, texts and across other languages. The progression continua for this learning outcome is particularly helpful as it explicitly names the aural and figurative features that can support us in our teaching. This is a fun and enjoyable learning outcome for all classes to explore.

Teanga ó Bhéal Toradh Foghlama 10 agus Contanam dul Chun Cinn

Below you will find a series of task cards which provide suggestions for learning experiences to bring Learning Outcome 10: Playful and Creative Use of Language/Toradh Foghlama 10: Teanga a Úsáid go Spraíúil agus go Cruthaitheach to life. We would encourage you to download these cards, use them flexibly and adapt them to suit the strengths, abilities, needs and interests of your class.

Task Card 1: Figurative Language/Teanga Mhearfarach

Children should experience Figurative Language, such as puns, metaphors, idioms, from a young age. Figurative Language is best learnt in real-life contexts. The Communicative Approach provides an effective way to explicitly teach and learn Figurative Language.

Task Card 2: Sound and Syllables

This task card focuses on enabling children to use language playfully and creatively. The activities are designed to develop some of these skills through explicit teaching and provide ample opportunity for practice.

  • Éist le agus dírigh ar rainn agus amhráin atá ar eolas acu
  • Idirdhealú a dhéanamh idir focail gan bhrí agus fíorfhocail agus spraoi leo

Tasc Cárta 3: Rímeanna agus Rabhlóga

Baineann páistí taitneamh as rímeanna agus rábhlóga. D’fhéadfaí rímeanna agus rabhlóga a úsáid sa seomra ranga go leanúnach tríd an lá ar fad chun sos gníomhach a thabhairt do na páistí i rith an lae scoile. Maidir leis an toradh foghlama seo, moltar go n-aithníodh an páiste gnéithe aiestéitiúla de chluasteanga agus theanga mhearfarach agus go mbeadh an páiste ag súgradh leo. Tabharfaidh an tasc cárta seo smaointe chun rímeanna agus rabhlóga a fhorbairt i do sheomra ranga ar mhaithe leis an toradh foghlama seo a chur chun cinn.

Tasc Cárta 4: Teanga a Fhorbairt le Ceol

Music can be a great tool for encouraging and motivating children to use language in a playful and creative manner. This task card provides examples of how music can be explored to develop an appreciation of rhythm and sounds in language. Foghlaimíonn páistí stór focal tábhachtacha ó bhéal ach deiseanna le haghaidh aithrise a bheith acu trí scéalta, amhráin, súgradh agus nósmhaireachtaí laethúla (CTB, 2019, lch. 35).

Task Card 5: Nonsense Words

This Learning Outcome recommends that the child distinguishes between and has fun with nonsense words and real words/focail gan bhrí agus fíorfhocail. Nonsense words or nonwords are phonetic, pronounceable words that have no meaning; for example 'glub' or 'yit' or 'zil'. Exploring nonsense words can be a fun and playful activity for children. It also provides an assessment opportunity for teachers to get a sense of the decoding and blending skills of children in their class.

Task Card 6: Use of Digital Technology

Pictures, images and videos allow for creativity with language. Such texts offer children the scope and opportunity to be imaginative and playful with the language they choose and use.

Is féidir teicneolaíochtaí digiteacha éagsúla a úsáid chun tuiscint a fhorbairt agus chun faisnéis a aimsiú agus a bhainistiú agus léirmheas a chruthú bunaithe ar an bhfaisnéis. Toontastic 3D is an app that allows children to create stories or science reports in a fun and interactive way.

Pobble 365 displays a new photograph every day which can be used to initiate and develop language lessons i nGaeilge, i mBéarla nó i dteangacha eile.
