Success for All!

Seaview presented ‘i ‘u ce:p ‘uw ‘eli ‘al

The Seaview Hul'qumi'num Culture and Language group presented ‘i ‘u ce:p ‘uw ‘eli ‘al - composed by Carrie Reidge - at the 2022 Christmas concert. The group wanted to start the Christmas concert off by giving thanks to Snaw-Naw-As for allowing them to learn on their land and sharing good thoughts and feelings for everyone attending the concert.

Mr. Manson and Ms Jessica are so very proud of the amazing work the students did.

DAC & FAC Office Closure

The District Administration Centre (DAC) will be closed during the winter break from Monday, December 19, 2022 until Monday, January 2, 2023, reopening Tuesday, January 3, 2023.

The Rentals Department and Facilities Reception will be closed over the Winter Break from December 19 through January 2, 2023. No rentals will occur during this time, with the exception of pre-approved community school programs, childcare operations, or school programs that have pre-authorized access, such as grad photo sessions and secondary athletic team practices.

Access to the Facilities Office will be by appointment only. Offices will reopen on Tuesday, January 3, 2023.

Regular Board Meeting

At the Regular Board Meeting on Wednesday, December 14, the Board adopted a bylaw to allow the acquisition of land adjacent to Bayview Elementary. Students from Frank J. Ney Elementary School Choir performed for the Board; the Board approved the School District Statement of Financial Information (SOFI) as presented; made the three-year draft local school calendar available to the public for 30-day consultation; and discussed prom ceremonies.

The Board also directed the Board Chair to write a letter of funding advocacy to the Minster of Education and Child Care and the Minister of Finance with the intent to work together on a plan to replace Nanaimo District Secondary School. View the full agenda here.

Local School Calendar 30-Day Consultation

The Board of Education is currently seeking feedback on the following community engagement:

The draft three-year local school calendar for 2023-24, 2024-25 and 2025-26 was presented at the December 7, 2022 Education Committee meeting. Following a decision at the Regular Board meeting on December 14, 2022, we are now seeking community input for the next 30 days.

Background information and the draft calendars can be found on our community engagement webpage. Feedback will be received until Sunday, January 15, 2023 by emailing consultation@sd68.bc.ca.

Gift Wrapping Services

The Wellington Jazz Academy will be providing gift wrap services at Country Club Mall through the month of December. Please come out and have your gift wrapped. The gift wrap is by donation, which will benefit the Wellington Jazz Academy.

Learning with Syeyutsus

Season 3 of the TRC#57 Speaker Series "Learning with Syeyutsus" begins in the new year with a conversation about storytelling with Joshua Whitehead and Angie Abdou. Register today.

This season, NLPS has partnered with UBCPress and Vancouver Island Regional Library for a thought-provoking speaker series

The Vancouver Island Regional Library has a three-part video series featuring Canadian authors and illustrators available until December 17.

The series, which started December 4, is geared towards school-aged children with the following authors/illustrators:

  • Jeremy and Hermione Tankard, on writing and illustrating their series Yorick and Bones
  • Illustrator Soyeon Kim, who shows how she creates dioramas for her illustrations and how others can create a diorama-inspired collage of their own.
  • Author Nicole Testa reads from her book Macaroni et Téo Incognito (presented in French).

These free videos will be available online and on the YouTube channel until Saturday, December 17, 2022.
