Senior Leadership Team Update
We cannot end the week and term without again paying tribute to all Year 11 and Year 13 students for the ambition, courage and resilience they have shown throughout another challenging week of examinations. It is pleasing to report that, almost without exception, students have left every examination feeling positive and that they had been given questions which allowed them to shine. At roll call this afternoon we celebrated their efforts so far with a round of applause. They will continue to work hard over the half term break with a big fortnight of exams on our return.
Families of students in Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 have been issued with a booklet about the upcoming end of year assessments. Please take the time to look though these so that you can see how to support your child to do the best they can. There are details of what subject content to revise, where to find resources and information about effective revision techniques. For Year 10 this is the start of the run up to the GCSE examinations they will sit in Year 11 and one of their three chances to practice. We know that students who approach these opportunities seriously benefit from the practice and achieve their potential. Choice, not chance.
Two valued colleagues are leaving us today. Mr Roberts has been a valued and reliable member of our science team for over 8 years. We wish him well as he moves onto a new post. In a short space of time Mrs Ziller has made a significant contribution to improving attendance at KEVI. We wish her well in her new role.
Have a wonderful break and let’s hope the fine weather continues.
Mrs S Jones - Executive Principal & Mr M Wilkinson - Acting Head of School
Values – Respect
All of our routines and standard operating procedures at KEVI come back to three golden rules: Be Safe; Be Ready; Be Respectful.
We have a very clear, simple and affordable equipment list: 2 black pens; 1 purple pen; 1 pencil; 1 ruler; 1 rubber. Together, our KEVI 6, can be purchased from the school shop for 40p.
When we talk about the KEVI 6 we often speak about the importance of being ready because ‘Be Ready’ is one of our golden rules.
However, this is also about one of our values: Respect. Being ready for each lesson shows respect to the teacher and respect to the rest of the class by not wasting their learning time by needing to borrow equipment or slowing down tasks by searching for a purple pen when it should be out on the desk at the start of each lesson.
Students who are not equipped with the KEVI 6 will be issued with a lunchtime pastoral detention.
Why we do what we do -Academy Rationale
Every six weeks we take the opportunity as a school to thank members of our community for the support they have given us and the contributions they have made. We write messages and attach them to our Gratitude Tree. You can see two examples below, tolerance and respect which also happens to be one of our KEVI values.
The first week back we are thanking people for their support in relation to the British Values. The five British values are:
- Democracy
- The rule of law
- Individual liberty
- Mutual respect
- Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs
An example of two of them:

Homework
Thank you for your continued support with the self-quizzing homework this half term as we have revisited the standard required to complete the homework correctly. Students have worked really hard in tutor time to practise this important skill so that they will be prepared for their lessons, and in the coming years will know how to revise effectively for their GCSE exams.
Please be aware that self-quizzing homework will finish for the half term on Sunday May 28th and start again on Monday June 5th. Any Year 10 homework set by subject teachers should however be completed.
Thinking Ahead – My Future, My Choice
Attention Year 8 & Year 9!
- What are your future plans & career possibilities?
- What plans to do you have after you have completed your GCSEs?
- Do you plan to go on to further/higher education? If so what courses might you study?
- What career ideas do you have for the future at the moment?
In year 7, 8 and 9 you will be learning new skills and knowledge that will give you the confidence to help you plan your next steps. This process starts with your careers education in school which will encourage you to think about your strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes. You will also start to make some important decisions that could influence your future career path as you will be choosing your subjects to study for GCSE. This process will begin for all Year 9 students early next year.
Each week we will show you examples of the various careers linked to the subject you are studying. This week’s career idea is ........

Table Talk
Respect is a key KEVI value and is essential component of keeping healthy relationships with others. Many students find it difficult to build and maintain healthy relationships, It would be great if you could take the time around the table to discuss healthy relationships and how to build and maintain them. Here are some indicators of a healthy relationship to help you start.
Mutual respect. Respect means that each person values who the other is and understands the other person's boundaries.
Trust. Partners should place trust in each other and give each other the benefit of the doubt.
- Honesty
- Compromise
- Individuality
- Good communication
- Anger control

How to Help Your Child Get Motivated in School - Child Mind Institute
If you have a child who is struggling in school and doesn’t seem to be motivated to make an effort, the first thing you want to do is explore whether there is some obstacle getting in their way. Learning issues, social challenges, emotional problems can all cause children to disengage academically.
As a parent, your presence in the academic life of your child is crucial to their commitment to work. Get in the habit of asking them about what they learned in school, and generally engage them academically. By demonstrating your interest in your child’s school life, you’re showing them school can be exciting and interesting. This is especially effective with young children who tend to be excited about whatever you’re excited about. Teenagers can shut down if they feel you are asking too many questions, so make sure you are sharing the details of your day, too. A conversation is always better than an interrogation. It’s important to stay involved but give older children a little more space. If you’re on top of your child all the time about homework, they may develop resistance and be less motivated to work—not to mention the strain it will put on your relationship.
Word of the Week :Void
Void: adjective – not valid; not legal; adjective – completely empty;noun – a completely empty space;
Origin Old French: vuide – vast, wide, empty, unoccupied. When the teacher left the school, he left a void which was felt by all. The space in the loft was a void in which she decided to store the camping equipment. The void space waited to be filled with chattering students returning after a holiday. The contract, because it was not signed, was void.
Maths
Years 7 and 8 will be reciting their times tables to help embed them in their long term memory.
At the end of each lesson, they will stand behind their chairs in silence, preparing for themselves for the next lesson and just before they leave the whole class will chant the timetables assigned for that week.
Week commencing 05/06/2023 - we will be chanting our 8 times table.

Accelerated Reader
KEVI20 WC 5th June Lesson 2
Accelerated Reader 34
This week we celebrate our Word Quarter Millionaires and encourage them to quiz to reach their Word Half Million score.
KEVI Word Quarter Millionaires are:
Year 7
- Tori, Grace, Shanel, Oscar W, Freya,
Year 8
- Ava, Poppy, Evie, Charlotte, Ryan B, Sam P.
Words are added to ongoing scores from completed quizzes which have scored a pass mark.
Please encourage your child to quiz on the books they have read. They are able to do this in tutor times and during KEVI Reads times. Quizzing shows us how well your child has comprehended the book they have completed and indicates their progress to us. It also supports us in helping your child to choose books appropriate to their ability.
Library Opening Times
Library opening times continue to be affected by external examinations as the Library is used on a daily basis as an examination room. Days and times the Library is open are published for students outside the library and also shared via tutors and assemblies. Should students choose to read books from home, please Google “A R Bookfinder” where you will be able to check the level (BL) of more than 180,000 books.

Sports Enrichment
Year 7 had a lovely evening of rounders against Year 7 Skegness Grammar School this week. The team demonstrated great teamwork and communication, with lots of great sportsmanship. Fielding improved throughout the game with some excellent catches. Although we showed lots of determination and perseverance, unfortunately it was not a home win for KEVI this time. Well done everyone for a great effort.
Please see the Term 6 Timetable below in readiness for next term. Preparation continues for the DRET 10th Anniversary Summer Cup 2023, please attend clubs for team selection. Special VIP guests will be in attendance!
Clubs continue to run at lunch times and after school for Summer Cup Athletics, Tennis, Cricket, Table Tennis, Rounders and Boccia. Students should attend clubs to enable them to be considered for team selections for upcoming fixtures and events, including the 10th anniversary Summer Cup on 6th July 2023.
If your child has any special sporting interests or achievements outside of school, please make us aware so we can help to support their future development. Feel free to email me on lburton@kingedwardacademy.co.uk.
