September 19th Meeting

Welcome to DKG Epsilon Omega 2019-2020!

On one of the last beautiful afternoons of summer, we had our first meeting of the year. Many Epsilon Omega members gathered at the lovely home of Debbie Wendel. The upcoming year’s budget was discussed in detail. Items were explained and then voted on. The budget was approved by all members present. Then the proposed calendar items were discussed and approved. Detailed calendar events will be shared with the membership by the president.

When the meeting adjourned, an Italian-themed meal was enjoyed by all. The executive committee provided delicious lasagna, salads, drinks, etc. It was a pleasant gathering.

New Teacher Baskets

On October 16, 2019, we completed another successful project of creating baskets to say “Welcome” to our new San Lorenzo Unified educators.

Thanks to Pat Brajkovich for making the majority of purchases for our baskets and Charlotte Davis for the use of her house for the assembly process. We had so many donations that are baskets were overflowing and some of our supplies were stored for use in next year’s basket creations. Forty baskets were created and delivered. I had a chance to speak with one new teacher at Bay School who was very appreciative of her basket.

Area III Fall Conference

This year’s Area III Conference was well worth attending! Our guest speaker, Ms. Kari McAllister, gave an extremely informative talk on Transgender, Health, Bullying, and the things that connect us.

Kari’s presentation talked about how to become more aware of ourselves and others and break down the barriers that can keep us apart. Kari’s talk was related to her personal experiences and the difficulties in making the choice to be her authentic self. The audience gave her a standing ovation at the end of her presentation.

The Conference was held at the Crow Canyon Country Club, Danville on October 19th.

Mary Mallet was presented with a chapter honoree award by Sue Noyes, DKG CA State President (blonde hair) and Olithia O'Toole, Area III officer.

We enjoyed brunch, bidding on several silent auction items, and participating in a raffle to win some terrific baskets created by all Area III chapters in attendance. A new prize was given for the two chapters with the greatest number of members in attendance. Epsilon Omega had the second highest number in attendance and won a box of chocolates.

Baskets were created by each Area III chapter in attendance.

In Memory

Sadly, Yolanda Minor’s wonderful mother has passed away. I so enjoyed seeing her at Cheryl Wozniak’s meeting and also at the Relay for Life events.

Her viewing was Monday, October 28th from 12:00 - 4:00 at C.P. Bannon and her funeral was Tuesday, October 29th at 11:30 at St. Benedict's Church in Oakland.

Respectfully Yours,

Mary Ann Davis

Upcoming Events and Meetings

April Showers - Community Service Project

4:00 - 6:00 PM at Charlotte Davis’s home, 542 Broadmoor Ave, San Leandro.

RSVP by email cdavis@eljay.org , voicemail 510-635-2851, or text 510-914-3512.

This is a good meeting to introduce a prospective member to the work of Delta Kappa Gamma. Please invite a friend.

If you are bringing basic hygiene supplies, please try to have them pre-sorted in advance so they can be placed in the larger bags with like items when you arrive.

There is a real need for undergarments for men. (New boxer shorts are a special treat. Sizes 34 and 35 are the most requested sizes.) There is also a need for socks, (two pair are given to each guest). Don’t forget gloves, hats, and caps; they are also appreciated.

You may wish to bring items for our Jared Boxes to this meeting. We are collecting things for newborns. These will be assembled on March 19, but we collect items all year.

You may bring appetizers to share while we work. If you would like to bring food, please limit to appetizers or beverages in smaller amounts. Please be sure to take the leftovers home to make the clean-up work easier for our hostess.

Educational Excellence

1:30 PM - 4:00 PM Metro Lighting 2240 San Pablo Ave, Berkeley.

Spotlight on Educational Excellence: Health & Well-Being

The physical, social-emotional, and mental health and well-being of every student is of great concern to all educators. In January 2016, the California Healthy Youth Act became law. In May 2019, the California Department of Education adopted the new California Health Framework. In August 2019, Assembly Bill 34 on Bullying and Harassment Prevention was expanded. On September 9, 2019, a proposal to update AB 1767 on Pupil Suicide Prevention to include education for kindergarten through sixth grade was passed. In nearly every area of student health, state laws, school policy, and instructional practices are changing in response to increased needs in all areas of student health.

On January 26, 2020, Dr. Cheryl Wozniak, Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services for Piedmont Unified School District, will present highlights from the new laws, the K-12 Health Standards, and the California Health Framework. Come join the discussion and share your insights and expertise on these important topics.

Please bring an appetizer or dessert to share.
