LBC Dance Mosaic Mural SUBMISSION

Erin Reynolds' Dance with the IDRL

The LBC Dance Mosaic Mural Augmented Reality Experience mixes media and converges technologies of remote presence with live dance, inspired by the sustaining power of nature and place.

We have captured a place-based performance, choreographed to show the sustaining power of nature, with a vision for the future. This work is both everywhere and nowhere, engaging unknown audiences in a polyvocal narrative, simultaneously representing the past, present, and future of Long Beach.

The AR experience remembers a performance from the past, and maps it to the city. Through this technology, we share what would otherwise be invisible and lost to the future, making our cities not only smarter but more engaging for any visitor at any time.

This work lives in digital space, layered upon and inspired by the physical space of Long Beach. We recognize that this hybrid space is inseparable from the sacred site of Puvungna. We acknowledge that we move and engage and learn on the land of the Tongva / Gabrielino and the Acjachemen / Juaneno Nations who have lived and continue to live here. We recognize the Tongva / Acjachemen Nations and their spiritual connection as the first stewards and the traditional caretakers of this land. We thank them for their Strength, Perseverance, and Resistance and strive to learn and teach and inspire others, as they do inspire us.

LB AUDITORIUM LIVE SUBMISSION

Judit Samper Albero with the IDRL

The Long Beach Auditorium, Live From the Past piece, presents an important part of the History of Long Beach.

The mosaic mural situated at the Harvey Milk Promenade Park was once the centerpiece of the Municipal Auditorium and an important part of the cultural life in the city.

This building was created in 1932 replacing the first one created in 1905 at Seaside Way, along the east side of the pier. Nowadays, the Rainbow Lagoon Park area.

Until its demolition in 1975, through the Auditorium passed some of the most popular artists of the moment like Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, or Elvis Presley.

In our daily routines, we come across pieces of history every day without realizing them. There are always there and we don’t even notice them.

With this AR experience, we bring to life the story that sleeps behind this beautiful mosaic. The reconstruction of the disappeared auditorium brings the past to our present to tell us its story bout the cultural past of the city keeping it alive through it. AR technology brings the past to our fingertips and allows us to virtually touch it and manipulate it to have a better understanding of it, ensuring the future of its memory.

HISTORY

The mosaic mural at Harvey Milk Park was part of the American Art's New Deal from the federal government's art program. Designed by Henry Allen Nord, the mural was completed in 1937 by 40 artisans. It was originally placed on the Long Beach Municipal Auditorium, but later moved to its current location when the Municipal Auditorium was demolished in the 1970s.

The Long Beach Municipal Auditorium was the cultural gathering place for events in the city. The Auditorium hosted some of the most popular artists of the moment including Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, and Elvis Presley.

" Mapping and animating human movement, inspired by the wisdom of local indigenous peoples, as a mosaic of the past, present, and future - educating & enriching the urban experience through AR. "

Judit Samper Albero | Lecturer, CSULB Department of Design / IDRL Collaborator | ARCLB Creative/Technical Director, Auditorium Team

"AR brings to life a piece of forgotten History. The Old Mosaic in Harvey Milk Promenade Park is placed virtually in its original placement where was created, the Municipal Auditorium."

US Ignite, in partnership with Facebook Reality Labs, selected Long Beach as one of three communities to participate in the Augmented Reality Developer Challenge. Through these AR Developer Challenges, we aim to facilitate community-driven development of AR applications to address local problems and opportunities. Nationally, two additional communities were selected: the city of Raleigh/Town of Cary, NC, and Philadelphia, PA.

OUR MISSION AT THE IMMERSIVE DESIGN RESEARCH LAB

Responding to the need for active design research as critical to design practice, while taking on the challenges of sustainability, urbanism, technology, and human value; the Immersive Design Research Lab (IDRL) at Cal State Long Beach engages in a continuous program of interdisciplinary projects – both investigating and initiating behavior in high- and low-tech participatory environments. At the core of this action research is the changing human experience at the intersection of technology and space. The IDRL provides the foundation to create value through the catalytic action of creative endeavors, innovative teaching, and engaged service to the community as collaborative partners with visionary people and organizations.
