The Essential Graphics panel is where Text, Vertical Text, Rectangle, or Ellipse are created or an image is imported. Layers can be renamed and moved above or below each other. The Font can be changed along with Text Appearance (Fill, Stroke, Drop Shadow, Drop Shadow Opacity, Drop Shadow Angle, Drop Shadow Distance, Drop Shadow Size and Drop Shadow Blur).

Align & Transform

Position, Anchor Point, Scale, Rotation and Opacity can be controlled from this panel.

Use a PNG

Importing a PNG

When to use a PNG

  • When you want to use a photo.
  • When you want to add texture.
  • When you want to add a vignette.
  • When you want to use a gradient.
  • When too many layers would be added to the Essential Graphics panel.

Some PNG considerations:

  • The Rush user will not be able to change the colors.
  • Using large dimension or numerous images can cause bad performance in Rush mobile.
  • Use 72dpi.
  • Use RGB color mode when creating graphics for accurate color.

Learn how to make a Title with a PNG background:

Responsive Design — Position (Pinning)

  • Easily create an auto-scaling background bar by pinning the shape layer to All Edges of a Text layer.
  • Objects below Text should be pinned to the Bottom Edge of the Text to allow a user to add more than one line of text and the object will move downwards to accommodate it.
  • Pinning may influence the animation since objects will generally relate to the topmost text.

Learn about creating Responsive Design for multiple resolutions:

Responsive Design — Time

Responsive Design — Time locks keyframes so that they can never be manipulated, even if the end user lengthens or shortens the title OR it can make the title faster or slower by stretching the clip in the Timeline.

Using Intro 1 frame Outro 1 frame Responsive Design — Time.
  • Click the clip in the Timeline to access Responsive Design — Time.
  • To allow the entire title to be re-timed or if there is continuous animation through the title: Change the Intro Duration and the Outro Duration to both 00:00:00:01. This locks the very first frame and the last frame.
A lower third with Responsive Design — Time that locks the keyframes so they can't be re-timed.
  • If the animation stops during the middle duration (like in a lower third): Change the Intro Duration and the Outro Duration to cover the keyframes in the Effect Controls panel.

Roll

For credit rolls, Roll makes this easy.

Roll options.

The Tools Panel

The most utilized tools from the Tools panel are Selection Tool (V), Pen Tool (P), and Text Tool (T). In addition to the Essential Graphics panel, Text and Shape Layers can be created via the Tools panel. Clicking and holding on the Pen Tool and Text Tool icons will enable a flyout with more options. Using the Pen Tool and Text Tool directly on the Program Monitor will create these layers in addition to creating them in the Essential Graphics panel.

Creating Custom Shapes

  • Use the Pen Tool (P) to create a custom shape. Clicking and pulling the mouse will create bezier handles on the anchor points, like Adobe Illustrator.
  • Close a shape by clicking back onto the first anchor point.
  • To select the anchor points of a shape: select the object with the Selection Tool (V), or click on the layer in the EGP, and re-select the Pen Tool.
  • Additional anchor points can be added or deleted after a shape is created by clicking Ctrl while using the Pen Tool.
