The You & AI on Board
A serious game that changes the rules of artificial intelligence drawing its wealth from creative and collective intelligence. AI Impact Alliance and its partners invite experts to co-design the rules that shape AI's impact on society and the environment.
The You&AI on Board game raises awareness on the social, political and economic implications of AI, and strengthens democratic and collaborative policy design environments for digital economies and democracies. The mechanics (rules) of the game highlight decisive elements, such as investment models, data preparation and governance practices, to help players envision “intervention” scenarios along the socio-technical pipeline, from data collection to algorithmic output, to AI technologies deployed in different social environments. It is a research-creation project (a serious game) about AI governance, and while the game has an artistic (storytelling) axis, the outcome is a tool for AI policy design aimed towards an equitable distribution of the benefits AI can bring, the achievement of SDGs and the promotion of human rights.
The discussions facilitated by the You & AI Game will create a favourable space to explore areas of consensus on the governance of AI and data in digital economies and democracies.
This game is a tool that aims to improve the understanding of important civic choices in digital economies and democracies related to AI and data governance, improve the communication channels between informed citizens and policy-makers and informs legitimate and socially acceptable policies on AI and data.
Why a Game on the Political Economy of AI? Why Now? The You & AI on Board game challenges current power landscapes in AI. By breaking down mechanisms that cause an uneven distribution of winners and losers in digital economies, the game provides a tool to explore political, economic and legal solutions for more equitable distribution of AI’s benefits and the potential of prosperity it carries. Warnings of Digital monopolies were expressed already in 2016 by the World Bank. While the pandemic was an opportunity to accelerate digital transformation, it has deepened an uneven access to opportunities in digital economies. This divide disproportionately affects women globally. The game’s mechanics (the rules) plan to offer options (engagement methods, policy, funding) that players can choose from to lay the foundations of equal opportunities for all in digital economies.

The Co-Design Process will be held over a series of workshops, online and in-person over the course of many months. The You and AI Game is an initiative led by Valentine Goddard, Founder and Executive Director of AI Impact Alliance. Ms. Goddard is a member of the Advisory Council on AI of Canada, and a United Nations expert on AI Policy and Governance. She is a lawyer, a certified mediator, and recognized inter-arts curator. She is the lead architect and Founding Chair of AI on a Social Mission and the Art Impact AI programs. She authored a working paper that proposes a Framework for Multidisciplinary AI Design and Best Curatorial Practices for Art Projects Exploring AI Ethics.
