It's MAY! April brought an amazing Spring Plant Sale (thanks to YOU), lots of big rain storms and even a substantial forest fire. We're hoping May will be a bit more predictable as we finish up spring and get ready for summer. In the large display gardens, this means switching up from our winter annuals and bulbs to our summer annuals. We'll be adding marigolds, coleus, begonias and lantana throughout many of our gardens plus a few more super interesting plants like Stipa "Pony Tails", Euphorbia "Starblast" and Anigozanthos "Bush Ranger". We're also adding a special new feature in our gardens- a brand new gardener Nanci! We're thrilled to have our fourth garden position filled after 4 months without it and we look forward to what Nanci will bring in our spaces! Please welcome her if you see her on site and let the team in general know when you see a neat garden feature- they are a small but dedicated crew and we appreciate them (and our amazing volunteers)!
Spring Plant Sale is over but we still have some great plants available and want to give you the opportunity to take them home just in time for Mother's Day and the beginning of summer. Check out our End of Spring Virtual Sale- click here! Limited quantities available of each plant. All plants are reserved on a first come, first serve basis. Please email your order to hadley.cheris@ncdcr.gov BY 10am Thursday May 11, 2023 for pickup Friday May 12, 2023.
Get ready for our May Garden Lecture Series, May 13th, “Beautiful Bushes: Great Shrubs for the Home Landscape” presented by Bryce Lane. With all the talk about herbaceous plants for the garden, let’s not forget about woody plants, especially shrubs! Perennials and annuals can be very high maintenance where shrubs are so much easier to take care of. What makes a shrub a great plant for the garden? What does it mean to be time tested and what’s all the fuss about all these new plants? Come learn about Bryce Lane’s favorite shrubs, both new and established, and why they should be a staple in every garden. This lecture begins at 10:30 a.m. in Cullman Performance Hall at the North Carolina History Center, with a suggested donation of $3.
If you’re interested in a long term “behind the scenes” venture, we are looking for volunteers for raking, mulching, weeding, fence and trellis repair and MORE! It’s a great way to learn some gardening tips and tricks, especially for our area! If that sounds like your cup of tea, please contact me at hadley.cheris@ncdcr.gov.
We hope to see you soon! Happy Gardening,
Hadley Cheris, Tryon Palace Gardens and Facilities
