Remember The Joshua Series

Read

Joshua 4:4-7

So Joshua called together the twelve men he had appointed from the Israelites, one from each tribe, and said to them, “Go over before the ark of the LORD your God into the middle of the Jordan. Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.”

SIGN (אוֹח, och). An object or act that points to a spiritual reality. The most common use of “sign” in the Old Testament points to God’s power. (The Lexham Bible Dictionary)

Why did God ask Israel to create an altar as a sign? Read the following passages.

  • Exodus 12:25-27
  • Exodus 13:14-16
  • Deuteronomy 6:20-21

Reflect

Is there any physical object or action that can help you remember who God is or what He has done?

Think and Discuss.

Read

Judges 2:8-11

Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died at the age of a hundred and ten. And they buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath Heres in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash. After that whole generation had been gathered to their fathers, another generation grew up, who knew neither the LORD nor what he had done for Israel. Then the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD and served the Baals.

Reflect

How could the generation right after Joshua immediately reject the Lord?

How does this apply to your life?

Forgetting God is intentional.

Why do we forget?

UNBELIEF: Saying "no" to God's miraculous power

Read Hebrews 3:7-13

Describe the effects and fruit of unbelief.

Reflect

Fear and complaint are the fruits of unbelief. Do you notice these fruits in your life? In what situations do they typically reveal themselves?

Respond

Ask the Holy Spirit if there is unbelief living within you. Allow Him to scan your life for roots of fear and complaint. If He convicts you of specific areas of sin, ask Jesus to forgive you. Commit to fill your mind and mouth with thanksgiving.

Take time today to tell someone a story of God's faithfulness or miracle in your life.
