LEEMING SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL vOLume 2, MARCH 2023

principaL's addres

Congratulations to Brendon on his appointment as Collegiate Principal at the Leadership Institute. We acknowledge the work he has done over the last 12 years in building and bringing the school and staff and students to the notable levels of achievement, not only in student progress, but staff promotions and significant Building and works done over this time. This year has seen some changes across Leadership with Mel Hansen stepping into Deputy Principal role, Mohamad El Chami Teaching and Learning & Coordinator role and myself Principal Term 1 and Damon Atthowe Term 2 Principal. Lee Barclay will be return to Kelmscott SHS for the start of Term 2. We wish him all the best as returns to his substantive role and thank him for this time here back filling Mr Atthowe whilst he was on leave.

We have had families hosting 19 students visiting from Meji University High School. They have sattended school at LSHS for four days and had a day at Rottnest Island and time with the host families. Thank you to Jo Sgro for her work in organising this. The Japan tour is still waiting approval from the Minister, and is planned for December 2023.

This Year 8 staff from ESC and LSHS attended International Women’s Day Breakfast to recognise Women of Achievement Awards in the Department of Education. Celebrating our staff and recognising the amazing school leadership we have across our diverse range of school roles was a pleasure to share this time with many dedicated staff.

This term our STEAM committee have visited other schools to view their facilities in planning and informing our $1.5M build which is still in the tender stage. This is one of our priorities for Capital works across the school. Our new Physical Education shed is due to begin construction over the holidays.

Open Day was held on the 14 March and we had two sessions. In the morning tour we had over 30 families and two tours active. In the evening tour, eight groups went through and we had over 200 visitors. It was a very successful afternoon with immense positive feedback. Thank you to our School Board chair Michelle Striepe for coming along to support us and represent the School Board. I look forward to other opportunities for the Board members and the P&C to be able to meet parents and students throughout the year in any upcoming coming events.

LSHS and LESC are working collaboratively to build a combined Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) to support the work between both schools. We have a mural being planned for May for New Beginnings to an Old Story. This is an ANZAC themed mural with local flora and fauna native to Wadjuk country. The mural is to be located on the back of the English block near our circle and memorial and flag poles. The mural will be painted by students from both schools and is supported by Artist Justin Martin.

We are in the early stages of working with the Jandakot Police Airwing to support our Aviation program and our Media students have been invited to prepare an inflight and pre-flight video to display to the visitors in their waiting lounge. A very exciting new venture for Leeming Senior High School students.

This term has been very busy with the changes to the NAPLAN schedule now in Term 1. I would like to commend all the staff who have supported the school and students into this first term and provided amazing learning experiences. All schools are experiencing a raft of challenges and I thank our community for the ongoing support provided to your children and our staff. As the school holidays approach, I would like to wish all our families a safe and happy school holiday break. Last day of term is Thursday 6 April.

Students return Monday 24th April, followed by a public holiday on Tuesday 25 April. School resumes Wednesday 26 April.

TERM 2 STUDENT PLANNER 2023

Gorgeous Globes

Trying to fit a rectangular map onto a globe requires the skills of a cartographic contortionist, but Ms Murray’s Year 7 Geography students were up for the task. With major meridians and perfect parallels, they compensated for distortions and their gorgeous globes were ready in time for a rousing chorus of the latitude and longitude song.

Four Square Mapping

Grid Referencing was taken off the page and into the playground when Year 7 students made walkable map squares filled with natural and cultural features. Walking through eastings and northings to discover feature locations, this proved to be a fun way of demystifying mapping skills for these budding cartographers.

Throwing the World Away

Shifting power and the quest for world domination was modelled by Ms de Beer’s Year 10 History students in a crazy game of world volleyball. This creative game was not only fun, but it also helped students to appreciate how the balance of power shifted back and forth as the world was engulfed by war.

Who tells your story

As any fan of the hit musical Hamilton will recognise, revolutionary writing in 1700s America differed greatly in style and tone from political writing today. However, photos from Mrs Flynn’s room where-it-happens showed Modern History students not throwing away their shot at investigating fascinating American source documents and analysing them for revolutionary message, purpose, context and perspective.

Library

Feature Display

The feature display for the beginning of the year was ‘World of Dinosaurs’. This display proved very popular and the books on display were enjoyed by all.

ePlatform ebooks

eBooks are becoming increasingly popular worldwide, particularly as they are accessible every day 24/7 from home or at school on your own device.

ePlatform is especially good as when students have a request for a book we can upload it straight away. Students are able to borrow the eBook and be reading it within 5 minutes.

How to borrow – Go to the School Portal; https://portal.leeming.wa.edu.au > Click on ePlatform > add your school username and the password is: 1library

Students are enjoying listening to audio books on their devices and phones (outside of school).

Year 7 Study Smarter Sessions

Study Smarter Sessions after school on Monday are open to all Year 7 students. The focus this term has been organisation skills both at school and at home.

All students can access organisation skills information on the Connect Study Smarter page.

Chess Club

There is a Chess tournament under way at the moment, with 36 students competing. They are playing on chess boards. We we will be doing an online tournament in Week 9 so students can get used to competing online against other schools in the interschool tournaments. The first regional tournament will be on Thursday 30 March.

Japanese Specialist Program Highlights for Term 1

Congratulations to all students who competed in the 2023 Education Perfect Global Lanaguages Championship.

Takashi ‘Waka’ Wakasugi Comedian Visit to Leeming Senior High School

On Friday 17 February the Japanese Specialist students in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 enjoyed meeting the Japanese comedian “Waka” . They participated in a 60 minute presentation and 60 minutes cooperative learning workshop in the LEC classroom. “Waka” deepened students interest in Japan and the Japanese culture as well as the language through games, quizzes, videos and interactive activities by using the students Japanese language skills in a 'real-life' context.

Wednesday “Youkai” Workshops

Each week during Term 1 students in Year 7 and 8 explored the idea of “Youkai” – A Japanese Mythology. Viewing the anime “Summer Days with Koo”, they discovered the mythological creature called a “kappa”, a supernatural being in Japanese history. After viewing the anime, students researched different types of “Youkai” and designed their own ‘Youkai’ character.

Also, a special “Welcome” Natsuko Omura our Japanese Languages Assistant. Students in Year 7-12 will meet Natsuko in their Japanese classes throughout the year. Find out more about Natsuko below:

Health Centre
Health Centre News

Hello all, it has been a very busy productive term and staff and students have worked hard and managed very well.

I wish all students, staff, and parents a safe, happy and healthy Easter break and a well-deserved school holiday. Happy Easter to you all, see you all in term 2 refreshed and ready to work.

National Ride2School Day

Leeming Senior High School celebrated active travel day on Wednesday 22 March. Many students supported this event by either walking or riding to school.

Parents, please continue to encourage your children to walk or ride to school every day while the weather is still good.

We support our students to walk or wheel to school because:

  • Students feel fresh and alert at the beginning of a school day.
  • There are fewer cars around the school which eases ‘drop off congestion’.
  • Students are more likely to reach the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity they need each day.
  • Students feel happier, healthier and perform better in the classroom.

Unwell students

Parents, I strongly advise you to please keep your child home if they are unwell with flu like symptoms and do a RAT test for COVID – 19.

COVID-19 is still in the community. Anyone with symptoms, even mild, should get tested! Fever, cough, sore throat, difficulty breathing, runny nose, headache and loss of taste or smell.

Medical Conditions

If your child has a medical condition or develops a medical condition for example asthma, anaphylaxis, diabetes or epilepsy please contact me or the Administration officers for an Action Plan form, if you have not already done this. This is so that we can manage your child’s medical condition appropriately whilst they are at school.

Anaphylaxis - Parents/Guardians if you have a child at the school that has anaphylaxis can you please make sure that their anaphylaxis Action Plan is updated every 12-18 months as this is the Department of Education policy.

Please provide the school with your child’s ASCIA Action Plan for anaphylaxis completed and signed by your child’s doctor. Update the plan (including a photo of your child) when the adrenaline autoinjectors are renewed (usually every 12-18 months).

Action Plans are available from www.allergy.org.au Help the school to develop an Individual Health Care and Risk Minimisation Plan for your child.

Health Centre

The health centre has been extremely busy this term with non-urgent matters in class time!

Reminder to students and parents that the Health Centre can only be accessed by students during students own free time e.g. before school, recess, lunch breaks and after school for non-urgent matters. Only emergencies will be seen in class time e.g. severe pain, bleeding, anaphylaxis, asthma and breathing problems.

Head Lice

Parents are reminded to please check your child’s hair frequently for head lice as these little critters appear every so often and even in high school!

Tips for preventing head lice, check your child’s hair regularly for head lice and eggs (‘nits’). Use a metal fine tooth ‘nit’ comb and plenty of hair conditioner applied to the dry hair, to make the task easier and more effective. To help children sit still for this, offer distracting activities such as, play a favourite video, provide games, encourage reading, offer a head massage, tie long hair back, braid long hair and/or put it up if possible. Consider applying hair gel or mousse. These do not prevent or repel head lice but may help to keep stray hair strands from contact with other heads. Avoid sharing combs or brushes. Remind your child to avoid head-to-head contact with other children, e.g. when working at the computer with others, when playing, or hugging. If your child has head lice, please notify their teacher. For more information: The Head Lice Fact Sheet is available from:

Medication

Parents and students are reminded that the nurse is NOT allowed to give paracetamol or other medication to students. Students are reminded that they can bring a dose of paracetamol to school to take if they have pain. e.g. headache, period pain, toothache etc.

Leeming Dental Therapy Centre

The School Dental Service continues to offer free dental treatment to school students aged 5 to 16 years or until the end of year 11.

Your child can continue to go to the same Dental Therapy Centre attended in primary school, or you can choose to attend another clinic if it is more convenient.

Please advise the Dental Therapy Centre if you have changed your address.

Your nearest Dental Therapy Centre is Leeming DTC: Ph: 0332 3194

If you are not enrolled and wish to do so, you can by contacting the Dental Therapy Centre clinic directly.
