Our Intent at Swinton Queen

As a school, we have considered both the cultural capital of our children and environmental impacts in order to safeguard our children through ensuring the curriculum is relevant and reflective. The careful consideration of our curriculum has allowed us to tailor the learning to our mixed age group classes, supporting children in feeling equipped for life beyond Swinton Queen Primary.

We aim to foster a holistic approach to support children in developing the skills and knowledge they require to lead positive, healthy and play meaningful roles in today’s society. In a diverse world, we want our children to have an awareness of different socio-cultural factors and understand how they can influence their own character as well as others.

We want our children to be empowered to make confident choices in their lives, underpinned by self belief and knowledge of themselves and the world around them. We support our children in developing high aspirations, identifying stepping stones to achieving these and the barriers they may face, developing their sense of self.

Children’s mental health and wellbeing is of high importance. We support children through enabling them to recognise and respond appropriately to a range of emotions, to self-regulate and understand the role that others have in maintaining positive mental wellbeing.

We want our children to be respectful, kind and considerate of all and have the emotional intelligence to recognise how their actions impact others. This includes knowing how to build healthy relationships based on mutual trust and respect, knowing when and how they can help others.

We teach our children in line with the National Curriculum, adhering to Relationships, Health and Sex education guidance. We address the importance and role of British Values through our progressive, insightful curriculum. Important messages are threaded throughout our school curriculum through its cross curricular nature. Subjects such as: ICT, P.E., R.E., History and Science allow children to develop a deeper understanding of an array of topics, ranging from keeping safe online to the importance of inclusivity.

Our Implementation at Swinton Queen

Our PSHE curriculum adopts the You, Me and PSHE Islington Scheme of Work which has been modified to suit our school and children. This scheme addresses the key National Curriculum underpinned by Relationships and Health education with the addition of carefully selected Sex education learning. Our scheme contains seven strands, these are:

  • Identity, society and equality
  • Physical health and wellbeing
  • Careers, financial capability and economic wellbeing
  • Keeping safe and managing risk
  • Sex and relationship education
  • Drugs, alcohol and tobacco education
  • Mental health and wellbeing

To further support mental health and relationship aspects of the curriculum, we have adopted the Thrive approach. This progressive programme supports children on a group and individual basis to develop their understanding of mental health and develop the skills to self-regulate. It is differentiated, allowing children to develop the emotional literacy skills they require to communicate with others in a safe, respectful and meaningful way.

The ongoing development of our assembly programme addresses societal influences and draws upon core values that we feel are important for our children to gain an understanding of. These assemblies support our children's character development by introducing them to relevant concepts and inspirational individuals.
