"The Stinger" APRIL 6, 2023

Good morning Stinger Families,

This week we had our AASA Writing state assessment for 7th and 8th graders along with our AzSci for our 8th graders. I am truly proud of how hard the students worked and how seriously they took these assessments. We know that these days are hard and we could not have asked for anything better than the way our students responded. They are dedicated kids who do care about their academics and future. Thank you to you for reading through all of the communication and helping support STMS during this assessment time. Our next set of assessments for ELA and Math start on April 17th. Please see the below schedule.

8th grade parents- please check out the updates in the 8th grade celebration section of this newsletter.

Enjoy your day off tomorrow. See you all Monday!

Jill Sarraino, Principal

Outstanding StAR Students

We talk so much at STMS about what we teach students at school should be practiced out in our community. There are students out there who continue to do the right thing, at school and outside of school and don't always get recognized for their efforts, or just might need a little pick me up.

As a reminder, STAR stands for- Safety, Trustworthy, Accountable, Respectful. Keep doing great things at STMS! If you or your child would like to recognize someone, the link is below. This will take you 30 seconds to complete. If you prefer to remain anonymous, we will make sure that happens.

THEME DAYS

Congratulations to our april Stingers of the Month!!!

Stinger Shining Staff

If you have 30-seconds and would like to recognize a staff member, please click on the link below. We appreciate these recognitions so much at STMS!

On Saturday, we celebrated Ms. Yadon. Ms. Yadon goes above and beyond for her students in trying to improve her craft as an educator. She embarked on transformative professional development, where she earned her National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS). Tonight we celebrated her being a Nationally Board Certified Teacher. We are so proud of you and lucky to have you as a part of our Stinger family. Congrats Ms. Yadon!
Congratulations again to Gabi Gochez, STMS Teacher of the Year.
Happy National School Librarian Day. What would we do without Mrs. Larson? She is truly one of the best!
Happy National Assistant Principal Week Mr. Boggs. We sure do appreciate you!
Wednesday was National Paraprofessional Day! Here are a couple pics of our amazing paras. 💚

Academics

Friday was a beautiful day to get out into the community! Our PALS students ordered and paid for their meals at McDonald's like champs. Thank you to everyone who donated to this outing as well as supporting funding for our last and final trip of the year. We are now counting down to April 28th when we will go to the World Wildlife Zoo and Aquarium.

7th grade students playing Chinese Yo-yo(Diabolo). Fun!!!
Congrats to these artists who were recognized at the Sonoran Arts League on Wednesday night. A special shout out to Mrs. Heerdt who leads and teaches these students in their creativity.

Summer Enrichment Programs for Summer 2023

After-School Tutoring

As you know, STMS is offering after-school homework help for students who are in need of additional Math and Reading support, outside of office hours. This support will be offered on Mondays. If you are interested, please use the below google form to sign up. Once the tutoring is full, you will not be able to complete it for that week. It will be cleared out each Tuesday. Students will be enrolled based on their grades of either a C, D, or F and this will be cross-checked at school upon receipt of the registration.

Mandarin Support

If your child is currently in Mandarin and would like tutoring, we have 3 students from CSHS who will be at STMS every Thursday after school. If your child needs help, please plan on attending Thursday office hours with Zhang laoshi.

8th grade celebration information

This section is for our 8th grade students and parents only. We will be hosting the celebration on Thursday, May 18th at the Fine Arts Center. We will have 3 celebrations at 1:00, 2:00, and 3:00. All 8th grade students will take their finals on May 16th, 17th, and 18th (same as 7th graders). Parents will have an opportunity to sign up for one celebration using sign-up genius. Students can invite 2 guests for a total of 2 guests and 1 student per family.

This year, we are changing the 8th grade promotion ceremony from a mini graduation to more of a celebration. Students will be asked to wear their stinger spirit shirts or our school colors. We will have a slideshow for the kids to watch - see below message from yearbook. I would love for you to find some great pictures of your kids from not only middle school, but also elementary school. It is really important that every student make the slideshow. Please send no more than 5 pictures per family. The pictures can be solo pictures or pictures with other STMS students. Please be sure they are school appropriate. :) We will give our RESPECT award out at this celebration, recognize students for their academic and behavior achievements, and have a couple of students speak/reflect on their time at STMS and moving forward to CSHS. For those who have attended past promotions, this will be very different, but good. I just want to give you a heads up so you aren't surprised that it isn't as formal as past years. You can save up for that for when they graduate from high school. The sign up genius will be posted in this section after state assessments.

If your child did not meet the criteria (grades, attendance, behavior) to participate in this celebration, you will receive a letter from the school after the state assessments. As a reminder, per the letter that went out Q1, Q2, and Q3, if a student had discipline, poor attendance or failing grades, they will not participate in the celebration.

Our PTO will be hosting a lunch for our 8th grade students who are eligible to participate, on Friday, May 12th.

Please continue to check back to this area for additional information. If you have any questions, you can reach out to Mrs. Sarraino.

Message from Yearbook regarding 8th grade celebration slideshow

Hey 8th Grade Parents, can you keep a secret? The STMS Yearbook staff is putting together a slideshow for the 8th Grade Celebration and we need your help! We'd love for you to send us photos or (short) video clips you have from things your kids have been involved in during their time here at STMS - we even have a super easy way for you to get them to us: stmsyearbook@ccusd93.net. Just send us an email with photos or video clips and your student's name, and we'll do the rest :) If you missed out on ordering an 8th grade ad in the yearbook, this is your chance to give your child their moment in the spotlight. We can work with lots of different images, the only ones we don't really love (because technological reasons) is ones you've saved from Facebook - original files are always best. We need them no later than Friday, April 28 - don't miss out!

CLASS OF 2027 T-SHIRTS

Please go to our STMS PTO website to order your Class of 2027 Falcon T-Shirt. You must pre-order by April 14th. These are not available at CSHS. This will make a great gift for your promoting 8th grader!

STINGER GEAR

Because we are asking students to wear their Stinger gear or green to the celebration, if you need something, please check out the below link.

Athletics

Looking for a way to meet new friends, have amazing memories and get involved in Stinger activities? STMS Competition Cheer and Pom team are the perfect way to do all that and more! You train to compete at competitions and cheer your Stingers on at home basketball games as well as be an ambassador in our community.

Tryouts begin May 3rd. Come grab a flier for more information at the front office or ask a current cheerleader for the QR code to join the group chat.

YEARBOOKS

A reminder from the Yearbook staff - yearbooks are still on sale for $45 through the link below. The deadline has been extended from April 1 to April 15 - we're never really sure how many books will be leftover, but if there are, they'll be available on campus for $50. Save $5 and help the Yearbook students meet their sales goal - we have less than 75 books to go!
